This fish cruising through one of our coral tree nurseries is a Caribbean reef shark. For , let's dispel a few myths about these misunderstood animals!

🚫 Sharks are hungry man eaters looking for any chance to attack.
✅ Most “attacks” on humans are mistakes due to poor water visibility.

🚫 Shark fins are flavoursome, nutritious and offer medicinal properties.
✅ Shark fins offer no flavour or nutritional value. In fact, as top predators, sharks accumulate contaminants from their prey, such as mercury.

🚫 Sharks have no predators.
✅ The greatest threat to sharks are… us. Each year, tens of millions of sharks are killed for their fins.

Sargass…ummm? 🤔

Commonly confused with , this brown or spends its life drifting at , unlike seagrass that lives rooted in the sediment. Traveling in dense pockets from the Sargasso Sea, provides natural and refuge for , , , and many other . Their air-filled structures known as pneumatocysts provide flotation while they travel with the . Similar to algae blooms, Sargassum blooms are influenced by leaching into the system, but are nontoxic. However, large blooms have the potential to form “dead zones”, meaning these mats block from reaching the seafloor and that need light to survive. The next time you are at the pay attention to how the air smells. If you smell rotten eggs, it is probably Sargassum. As the algae is rotting it releases gas and has been known to wash up in droves. SURVIVING DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS ON THE BEACH
https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/tutorial_currents/03coastal3.html

As longshore currents move on and off the beach, “rip currents” may form around low spots or breaks in sandbars, and also near structures such as jetties and piers. A rip current, sometimes incorrectly called a rip tide, is a localized current that flows away from the shoreline toward the ocean, perpendicular or at an acute angle to the shoreline. It usually breaks up not far from shore and is generally not more than 25 meters (80 feet) wide.

Rip currents typically reach speeds of 1 to 2 feet per second. However, some rip currents have been measured at 8 feet per second—faster than any Olympic swimmer ever recorded (NOAA, 2005b). If wave activity is slight, several low rip currents can form, in various sizes and velocities. But in heavier wave action, fewer, more concentrated rip currents can form.

When waves travel from deep to shallow water, they break near the shoreline and generate currents. A rip current forms when a narrow, fast-moving section of water travels in an offshore direction (away from the beach). Rip current speeds as high as 8 feet per second have been measured--faster than an Olympic swimmer can sprint! This makes rip currents especially dangerous to beachgoers as these currents can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea.

Because rip currents move perpendicular to (away from the) shore and can be very strong, beach swimmers need to be careful. A person caught in a rip current can be swept away from shore very quickly. The best way to escape a rip current is by swimming parallel to (alongside) the shore instead of trying to swim against the rip current back to shore, since most rip currents are less than 80 feet wide. A swimmer can also let the current carry him or her out to sea until the force weakens, because rip currents stay close to shore and usually dissipate just beyond the line of breaking waves. Occasionally, however, a rip current can push someone hundreds of yards offshore. The most important thing to remember if you are ever caught in a rip current is not to panic. Continue to breathe, try to keep your head above water, and don’t exhaust yourself fighting against the force of the current.

BREAKING NEWS: 13 Southern Resident killer whales have been declared "vulnerable" by WDFW due to their body conditions measured by SR3 between September 2021 to April 2022.

Out of the 13, twelve J and L Pod members are now in "poor condition" which puts them at a two-to-three times higher risk of mortality.

The twelve orcas in poor condition are:
J27 Blackberry (male, born 1991)
J36 Alki (female, born 1999)
J44 Moby (male, born 2009)
J49 T'ilem I'nges (male, born 2012)
J56 Tofino (female, born 2018)
L54 Ino (female, born 1977)
L83 Moonlight (female, born 1990)
L90 Ballena (female, born 1993)
L94 Calypso (female, born 1995)
L110 Midnight (male, born 2007)
L116 Finn (male, born 2010)
L117 Keta (male, born 2010)

The agencies are requiring commercial whale watch vessels to stay half a mile away from the vulnerable Southern Residents and urging all other boaters to keep away from them to allow them extra space to forage. We believe these measures are not enough. The last few years more restrictions have been added to commercial whale watching, and despite these efforts this population is still declining in health. It is clear that regulating whale watch vessels is not sufficient enough and more action and policy need to be taken to recover the food source, chinook salmon, in order to recover the SRKWs.

Over the upcoming days we will be posting Calls To Action and ways you can help urge for more to be done to help the declining Southern Residents. Keep an eye out on our social posts, and subscribe to our email to get immediate alerts.

Polar Bears Found Surviving in Greenland Despite Lack of Sea Ice - EcoWatch 24/06/2022

Good news 🎉

Polar Bears Found Surviving in Greenland Despite Lack of Sea Ice - EcoWatch Few animals represent the face of the Arctic like polar bears. The largest bears in the world, polar bears are excellent swimmers who spend more time in the sea than they do on land. Sea ice is the platform from which they hunt the seals needed to obtain the necessary calories to survive.
