New partnership with Henkel to optimize packaging for recycling 🤝

By installing an AUTOSORT™ detection system in their test laboratory, the manufacturer of globally recognized brands such as Schwarzkopf, Persil, and Pritt can now test their packaging before its market launch. This ensures their products have the right properties for easy sorting and recycling after disposal. 💡

Recognizing the important role product manufacturers play in the success of recycling, we’re sharing our expertise and working hand-in-hand with brand owners like Henkel to make a positive impact.

Dr. Volker Rehrmann, EVP and Head of TOMRA Recycling, says it best: ‘A functioning circular economy is only possible if everyone involved in the value chain works together. That’s why collaborations like the one with Henkel are so important."

We have two exciting highlights to share about our Reuse project in Aarhus! 🌟

First, we’ve partnered with NORMAL to introduce new iced latte cups as part of our initiative to reduce single-use waste. Second, we’re close to hitting a major milestone: 400,000 reusable cups distributed since January 2024!

Reuse is a foundational element of a circular economy, where all products and packaging are kept in circulation for as long as possible. A big thank you to everyone who is supporting this system. Let’s keep the momentum going! 🚀

Every summer, millions of music lovers flock to festivals, drawn by the live music and sense of community. 🎶

These events are incredible experiences, but they also come with a heavy environmental cost. 🌍

In Europe alone, festivals generate thousands of tons of waste, with single-use containers and bottles making up a significant portion. On average, a festival attendee produces around 2.8 kg of waste per day. 🗑️

We’re thrilled that our solutions are helping to change this. 🌞

Our machines have been featured at a couple festivals this year, including and more recently, the in Serbia. At EXIT, our machines, in collaboration with the Green EXIT initiative, allowed visitors to recycle cans and PET bottles and earn rewards for their efforts.

While bringing reusable items to festivals is always the best option, our recycling solutions provide a valuable alternative. They help ensure that single-use waste is properly managed and materials are reintroduced into the production cycle, promoting circularity and reducing the environmental impact of festivals.

This summer, let’s all do our part to reduce festival waste and support circularity.  💪

DRS in Turkey by 2025: a major step for a nation of 85 million 💪

Turkey is preparing for the transition to a deposit return system (DRS).
Following an amendment to the Turkish Environmental Law, the country is gradually establishing a system to collect approximately 20 billion containers every year.

📣 The Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change announced that the DRS will be implemented in 2025 — a process which will accelerate with the intended establishment of a system operator.

🌟 Norway is setting the bar high in beverage container recovery and recycling, with a deposit return system (DRS) boasting a 92% return rate and less than 1% littered. How do they do it?

An approach we call Clean Loop Recycling ♻️

By returning beverage containers to reverse vending machines via DRS, the containers maintain their quality, enabling them to be recycled into new containers again and again. This closed-loop system not only minimizes litter but also helps to create a circular economy.

Tackling plastic pollution requires a global effort 🌏

The recent INC-4 session saw global leaders, stakeholders, and experts get together in Canada to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution. While there’s optimism for progress, there are still challenges that must solved.
Here is a short breakdown of the key highlights:

📈 Progress: Key proposals have been made regarding restrictions and phase-outs, product design for reuse and recycling, and extended producer responsibility (EPR).

✅ Agreements: There is a high level of alignment on the importance of enhancing waste management and establishing financing mechanisms.

💡 Opportunities: The formal intersessional work offers a chance for further progress.

Despite these strides, there are still uncertainties regarding treaty adoption and negotiation pace. As we move forward in the fight against plastic pollution, it’s important to progress with specific definitions and concrete targets, particularly in areas of strong alignment like waste management.

We call on governments around the world to seize this opportunity and acknowledge their role. Their commitment to implementing meaningful policies and promoting international cooperation is key for effectively addressing plastic pollution. 💪

At TOMRA, we’re committed to combating plastic pollution through innovative solutions and partnerships. Visit our website to read our 10 recommendations for a more circular future for plastic. Link in bio

Today, we’re celebrating Global Recycling Day! ♻️

Thanks to those working at recovering and recycling the world’s resources. Together, we are forging a circular economy. 💙

Reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle are all essential strategies for tackling global waste.

♻️ Only 15-20% of the waste generated globally is recycled.
♻️ Paper is one of the most often recycled materials, accounting for half of the materials collected for recycling by weight.
♻️ Aluminum can be infinitely recycled, yet 7 million tons of it are lost to disposal every year.
♻️ Glass bottles and jars are fully recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without degradation of quality or purity.
♻️ Home composting could divert 330 pounds of food waste per household from landfills annually.

In collaboration with TOMRA and local eateries, Aarhus is now leading the charge against single-use plastic waste by piloting a new approach: Rotake Reuseable, an open managed system designed by TOMRA that offers a complete loop for takeaway packaging in urban areas.

This three-year trial for a convenient reusable takeaway system is kicking off with reusable cups, and aims to expand to other common food containers in the future.

You can opt for a reusable cup with a 5 kr. deposit when ordering your to-go drink at participating eateries, then return that cup to the nearest reuse collection point right in the city. All that’s left to do is tap your card or phone, and thanks to TOMRA's partnerships with VISA, Mastercard, Shift4. and Aarhus Kommune, you will get an automatic refund – directly into your bank account. Quick and easy!

Every refillable cup means less single-use waste and cleaner streets!

The prize for picking up the most litter?! More good for the 🌍

Every September, TOMRA holds our annual cleanup month, and this year we crowned 3 locations as the winners! The reward? Funds to have trees planted in their honor!

This year, our Recycling team from Koblenz decided to get their hands dirty! They came together to plant over 1,000 trees. It was important to the team to plant these trees in a certain location—the area where the devastating floods happened in Germany last July.

Last weekend, they headed out to a remote forest near Ahrweiler, Germany to make a difference and mitigate some of the devastating effects of the floods as well as the resulting rise in the invasive bark beetle population. They planted 1,130 trees including Sessile Oak, Sweet Chesnut, Tree Hazel and wild fruit trees which were recommended by a local forester.

Every piece of litter counts, every tree counts, every resource counts.

Thanks to our team for the amazing work at litter picking and tree planting. 🌳 ♻️

Too often, these valuable resources that could be recycled end up in our environment. At TOMRA, we believe that individual actions can make a big difference in creating a world without waste. We promise to not only talk the talk but also walk the walk! 🚶‍♂️ ♻
