The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was adopted in 1982. It lays down a comprehensive regime of law and order in the world's oceans and seas establishing rules governing all uses of the oceans and their resources. Last week Mr Erik Borgen, president of SNCC, acted as MC at the Norwegian Embassy in Singapore's UNCLOS Symposium, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the law.
In the words of the Embassy, "Guest-of-Honour, Minister K Shanmugam Sc, highlighted the importance of UNLCOS for two small maritime nations like Singapore and Norway, and Ambassador Eivind Homme and K Shanmugam both agreed that an agreement like UNCLOS would be much harder to achieve in today's political landscape."
