Let's start with the basics - what's an ETF? 🧐

It's short for Exchange Traded Funds, and put simply an ETF is a fund that's made-up of companies, bonds, cash or other assets. They're simple because just one transaction allows you to invest in all of the fund's assets, and they're savvy because they're almost always a diversified investment option 👍🏼

Exchange traded means that you buy and sell units of an ETF on an exchange like the NZX, so you invest in one the same way you buy and sell shares. Many ETFs are index-tracking, which means they're invested in a market index like the S&P 500 or the S&P/ASX 200. This can give you exposure to large international markets, as well as industries that you may not be able to otherwise invest in here in Aotearoa 🇳🇿

Did you know the government will contribute up to $521.43 into your KiwiSaver account every year? For every dollar you put in between 1 July and 30 June each year, the government will contribute 50c up to a maximum amount of $521.43.

How do you get that maximum amount? Simply make sure you’ve contributed at least $1,042.86 by 30 June each year, and the rest will happen for you.

Anyone who has contributed into their KiwiSaver, lives mainly in Aotearoa, is over 18 and isn't eligible for a retirement withdrawal will generally be able to get their boost. If you haven't been contributing to your KiwiSaver, now's the time to make the most of it!

How was our week? Smartshares hosted Auckland Young Professionals (AYP)'s March social networking drinks to mark the launch of our partnership, and our Client Development team was down in Christchurch to meet with the Crusaders (aka Super Rugby champions)!

Returns experience highs and lows, but over long-term periods you can generally expect a positive trend. For example, a 30-year-old who stays in KiwiSaver until they're 65 will see short-term ups and downs, but across the 35 years they become smoothed out.

Market fluctuations are a good time to check your strategy still fits your long-term investment goals. You can ride these waves with a well-structured investment strategy that matches your risk appetite, and if you want to see how yours stacks up you should read the Product Disclosure Statement(s) of the fund(s) you’re invested in.

These are a valuable tool for investors to assess their portfolio's risk as markets change - you can see ours with the link in bio. Last week we were honoured to be a part of the whakanoa (blessings) and opening of Moroki, a new housing project by Hāpai and Ka Uruora 🏠
