Our Chinese Short Film evening brought out many of our members despite the stormy weather earlier. Thank you for organising this cultural session for us Kai. The 7 movies were well directed. We look forward to more evenings such as these.
What a crowd drawing Children’s & Fireworks Day we had at ACCC Mangere. I could see all the children, they were so enthusiastic. Thanks to Chas Luen who organised the community talent for the trestle table activites. The children will certainly remember the joy of the day with emphasis on chinese folk games & activities. The day started at 2.30pm and finished at 9pm. With a break for a Kids Party & later at 6pm dinner. For the catering we have to thank the very talented Bonnie Lynch & Connie Kum & their dedicated group of helpers in the kitchen. The evening finished with a ballon drop.
I ran into Charlie & Mila Fong at the Tung Jung Yumcha recently. I was highly impressed when they told me that they had done a National Cross Country Championship & that Charlie had been placed 9th & Mila 11th. What an achievement. Their interest in running started when they were 9 years old following Mum (Angeline) & Dad (Richard) on easy runs round the neighbourhood. Nothing wrong with that healthy family activity. Back then Charlie & Mila dragged their feet. Now the scene has changed. The girls are much more eager & faster than their parents, as now they need to wait for them to catch up. I wish them well in their final year run, to be taking place this Sunday at the Zespri Aims Games in Tauranga.
The Charm of the Chinese Brush & Ink Art Exhibition, co-hosted by ACCC, opened yesterday. It is worth spending some time to enjoy every piece of artwork.
The visiting Harvard Kroks from USA sang a special chinese song for us at our ACCC Anniversary dinner.
It was an evening get together with friends & home town food for Phoebe Li. At Wan Fu restaurant she introduced us to the cooking style of her childhood. Memories of hot pot stewed meat of braised chicken & pork ribs with chunks of potato & corn cobs & noodles, all bubbling in a hot pot. Platters of sweet & sour pork, slithered stir fried potatoes, bean curd sheets, pancakes, cold glass noodles, jelly fish, sweet bean cakes of two varieties. Her lasting memory was of the everyday food , the bubbling pot of soup with lots of nourishing sauerkraut, slices of blood sausage & other condiments. This was eaten with steamed buns or rice. It was a luscious feast. Phoebe has finally completed writing the book about chinese busineses in NZ and so we are celebrating. And we are looking forward to its publication.
