Being a Strength & Conditioning Coach, observing your athletes hard mahi and determination as it comes to fruition is pretty special. I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside this young lady in the gym now for over 3 years. After placing 3rd overall and 1st Female at the NZ National Champs over Queens Birthday weekend, Lizzie Shapland, 16, embarks on a tour of Europe today to represent her proud whanau, Murray’s Bay Sailing Club and NZ in the 2022 29er European Sailing Champs, Kopenhagen, Denmark, World Youth Sailing World Championships, Netherlands and the 29er Open World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Lizzie’s main focus will be on the Junior World Champs. After qualifying for a third consecutive year, this will be her first tour of duty. Unfortunately over the last 2 years, NZ covid restrictions have prevented her from competing overseas. This is the pinnacle event for any youth sailing career. Many of our sailing sporting heroes have been notable winners of this event including Olympic medalist, Blair Tuke, America’s Cup Skippers, Chris Dickson, Russell Coutts and Dean Barker. Amazing enough Lizzie still has a few more years as a Junior and gets an opportunity to cement her name with the best.

All the best Lizzie! Let’s go!!!

That’s a wrap for another year. Thankyou to everyone supporting BSC who’ve hung in there for a tough year. 3 months out of mahi but I’ve been impressed especially with my 14 yr old, Lizzie Shapland who is lining up to compete at the next Olympics sailing in for NZ in the 29er class. She is mentally tough and blows me away with her training. Nearly lost the clean but recovered well and hit a personal best with a 40 kg hang clean, press and overhead squat today. Nice way to finish up the year. Have a safe Xmas and New year. Stay safe whanau.

It’s Day 58 for Covid restrictions here in Auckland. Gyms are still closed until level 2. Keeping active is key, not just for our physical wellbeing but our mental health. If we don’t “Use it, we lose it” and our hard work prior to lockdown turns to custard. Whether it be a bit of gardening, a bike ride, walking or having a boogie to your favourite playlist, it can change your mindset. For some of us, including myself, finding the motivation in these uncertain times can be a challenge. Not so for my mate, Sharky, who I met in a Kaitaia gym many years ago. I’ve drawn a bit of inspiration from the bro recently and given a reminder to be grateful. Hitting our 2nd lockdown on 18th August, Melbourne clocked up 200 consecutive days in lockdown. Now at 253 days, he set a mammoth target of 100,000 steps in a day starting at 4am, Sunday, covering 84km in 13hrs and 40 mins. Good on ya Sharky! I got in a Sunday stroll myself but failed miserably. 😂

I was telling my PT client the Warriors still have a mathematical chance to make the finals, to be criticised my mathematics is s**t and I can’t count reps properly. Oh I’m sorry.... did I say 15 or 20. Gotta love early Monday morning starts.

😂😂😂😂

Sad to hear the passing of Faatai Venu, 88, yesterday.
A true Gentleman and Legend who represented Samoa in Rugby, motorcycling and was a NZ Bodybuilding Champion and icon.. He was a long time member with Club Physical where I trained back in the day. He had a beautiful aura and inspired those who came into contact with him. He shared his knowledge of lifting and encouraged young fellas into the sport of bodybuilding. When you were fatigued, he would push you through for a few more reps when you felt you had nothing left. He always gave you an acknowledgement when you walked in the gym to train, whether it be a quiet “Hello” or just a smile, while he went about repping the iron and showing the young bucks how it was done. You’ll be missed by everyone in the Gym Brotherhood. Much love Brother!
RIP... Rep in Peace.... Arohanui 🙏🏽❤️🏋🏾‍♂️🏋🏾

Sport is where an entire life can be compressed into a few hours, where the emotions of a life time can be felt on an acre or two of ground. Sports is a theatre where sinner can turn saint and a common man become an uncommon hero, where the past and future can fuse with the present. Sport is singularly able to give us peak experiences where we feel completely one with the world and transcend all conflicts as we finally become our own potential.

“If you want something you’ve never had,
You’ve got to do something you’ve never done.

Work hard, train harder !!!

Awesome watching the Women’s team “Wildwhaea” from Waitakere, take out the Masters 70 yr old Women’s Waka-Ama Nationals down in Karapiro. Their expressions of pain and exhaustion shows what it takes to be National Champs! Well done Ladies! You’re amazing!

Kia Ora Whanau!!!
After 16 years at Justworkout Gym in the CBD, today is the last day of this amazing journey. Never thought I’d run a Strength and Conditioning business and do what I love. Seen staff and members come and go over the years and met some bloody amazing people on the way. To all my awesome work colleagues and clients who I’ve had the pleasure to work with over the years and stood by me, I am forever grateful. Sometimes you just need change to keep the fire burning and to step out of your comfort zone, rather than just going through the motions. 2020 has been a year we’d all rather forget but I’m looking forward to new beginnings after Xmas, hitting the ground running and will be working out of Tony Martins Sports Connection. Stay Strong, stay safe,
Much love! 💯👍🏾

Today is R U OK Day, an important reminder to check up on those around us ❤️

Don’t be fooled by a smile. Ask questions, listen, encourage action, check in with the brothers if you haven’t touched base lately.

2020 has been a challenging year for us all physically, mentally and financially therefore it’s more important than ever for us to stay connected.
