BeSportive.Kiwi
For Life.
BeSportive.kiwi is a movement aimed at enriching our youth sport culture through educating parents, coaches and schools – while inspiring young athletes to become better people and better athletes through playing and being involved in sport.
While keeping our youth engaged in sport remains a big challenge for our wider sports community, here's a timely reminder to parents, coaches, clubs and schools about the invaluable role sport plays in the holistic personal development and education of every young kiwi... or anyone of that matter
A huge congrats to Dillon Boucher for being appointed the new CEO of Basketball New Zealand👊 From these life lessons he has learned from sport that he shared when we launched last year, Dillon's going to not only be an awesome leader for the game in New Zealand, he'll also play a huge role in continuing to help improve the overall youth sport culture in our country. Go well Dillon!

Awesome seeing the campaign come alive. Great work NZ Rugby & All Blacks. And most of all thanks coaches
Such a powerful message from All Blacks legend Eroni Clarke for all youth sport coaches to aspire to. And great to have our sports community behind promoting it. So who coached your heart? Give them a shout-out to say
A big shout out to our new World Champion - what a legend! The ultimate role model for all of our young kiwi athletes .... oh, and sport parents and coaches too (check out Ross's wise words of advice for them at www.besportive.kiwi )
Now here's how to be a awesome sport parent - from one of the greatest of all time

If we truly want our young athletes to develop their skills and love playing sport, all parents and sideline supporters need to live by these 5 Golden Rules for Sideline Supporters. For our kids sake🙏. As Monty suggests 'just be positive' ...and if you struggle with that, both Phil and Mel have some sound advice 🤐🤐😜
The positive impact parents and sideline supporters have our young athletes personal development and love of playing sport is immeasurable. Sadly, so too can they do a lot of damage! So this winter season, let's ensure we all embrace The 5 Golden Rules for Sideline Supporters. Check them out at www.besportive.kiwi and please share this with all your fellow parents and sideline supporters. For all of our kids sake.
With the new winter sport season underway, if you have the privilege of coaching young athletes (or know someone who does), please check out the invaluable Golden Rules for Youth Sport Coaches at www.besportive.kiwi. And especially if you embrace the last rule, your young athletes will remember you fondly for the rest of their lives!
Coaches have a profound impact on our young athlete's personal development and love of playing sport (both positive and negative!) As we head into to new winter sport season, if you have the privilege of coaching young athletes (or know someone who does), be sure to check out these invaluable Golden Rules for Youth Sport Coaches. And especially if you embrace the last one, your young athletes will remember you fondly for the rest of their lives!
And also check out www.besportive.kiwi for Golden Rules for Sport Parents and Sideline Supporters - and let's all help create a better environment for our young athletes to love playing sport.
While it's so important for our young athletes to play multiple sports - it's even more important that they're playing the sports that they really want to play. See all 10 Golden Rules for being an awesome sport parents at www.besportive.kiwi
Really enjoyed speaking and facilitating a panel discussion at the Carbine Club on Friday about youth sport and our BeSportive.Kiwi campaign. A big thanks to the awesome panel who gave up their time to be part of it and really humbled by the great feedback. In fact, in a sad way it made all the more worthwhile when a guest who came up to thank me afterwards, broke down in tears telling me that had he heard these messages 10 years ago he wouldn't have mistakenly ruined his son's love of playing sport. A sombre reminder that us adults have got a bit of work to do to fix the problem we've created. Check out www.besportive.kiwi for a the 10 Golden Rules for Sport Parents - and keep a look out for the Golden Rules For Coaches.
When adults hear that what our kids love most about sport is having fun playing with their mates, many leap to the conclusion that winning doesn't matter to them (and many are even 'outraged' at the thought!). Truth is they couldn't be further from the truth. In the moment, of course our young athletes love winning - but win or lose, the result just doesn't mean as much to them as it does to many parents and coaches! They move on very quickly... so should we (and well before the car ride home too!)
Not convinced? Hear what some of our most famous sport parents have to say about it. Meanwhile check out our other nine Golden Rules for Sport Parents at www.besportive.kiwi
With many summer sports now underway for our young athletes, here's a timely reminder to all parents and coaches on how best to make it enjoyable for them while they learn some valuable life lessons along the way.In fact, hopefully so will you! Check out the 10 Golden Rules for Sport Parents on www.besportive.kiwi
Golden Rule #8 'The Mind Matters Most'. Such a great lesson for all parents right here.
Great article from Gregor Paul in the Herald today. Absolutely spot on when it comes to identifying 'pushy parents'. Another obviously sign worth adding would be those who attach their own personal self-esteem to the performance of their kid.....and don't realise no one has noticed!!
As Gregor says, adults have created this 'win at all costs' culture - we need to fix it. Fast!

Gregor Paul: Seven ways to know if you are a pushy rugby parent Parents won't be upset their kids aren't playing, they'll be upset they're not winning.
Sadly there won't be as much sideline support going on this weekend, but here's some positive advice for us sideline supporters when we're out there 'sporting' our kids! Please share & check out all 10 Golden Rules for Sport Parents @ www.besportive.kiwi.
Such an amazing response and feedback to our campaign launch and '10 Golden Rules for Parents' content. A big shout-out to all the sports organisations, clubs, schools and all the people who have shared it to date. Our aim is to get the message out to every sport parent in the country, so please keep sharing. And especially for those who've already seen the original - here's a cut-down version with just the 10 Golden Rules' only. Be sure to check out www.besportive.kiwi to view the individual 'golden rule' film content & some great advice for youth sport coaches coming soon too.

Thanks for your support & remember - always
Great story about BeSportive.kiwi today - thanks Stuff. Just sad it's a follow-up to a far too common story about parents pushing our young athletes far too hard, too young - which not only breaks them, but drives them away from sport altogether! Adults have created this problem - we need to fix it. Fast. Our kids deserve so much better.
