Māpura Studios
A creative space offering visual arts and art therapy programmes for people living with disability and diversity based in Auckland, NZ.
Mapura Studios (formerly Spark Centre of Creative Development) is a creative space offering innovative art programmes for people of all abilities, with particular care given to ensuring those with diverse needs are provided for. The sessions provide a learning process in visual arts education especially orientated to the requirements and circumstances of our artists; they also promote and encourage self-development through the vehicle of creative expression.
𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮 - 𝗠𝗮̄𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀
Māpura Studios Director, Diana McPherson, has been asked to represent the Oceania region at ArtPara - Shine Together in Paris next month.
She will present a paper to the world disability leaders forum. Her talk will be on the subject of disability arts in Aotearoa New Zealand and she hopes to open doors for our country’s, and our studio’s, disabled artists on the world stage.
ArtPara - Shine Together will feature an exhibition of work from disabled artists from all over the world.
Twenty seven countries will participate in the exhibition and this will be the first time NZ will be represented. Māpura is the only disability organisation that was approached and works by two of our artists will be included. Ululau Ama will show three paintings and Matthew Allerby two.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our artists, our studio, and the future of disability art everywhere.
Diana, we wish you 𝘣𝘰𝘯 𝘷𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘨𝘦!

In Thursday morning’s Leading a Creative Life class, artist Guy Seanyear gave the volunteers a painting lesson.
Guy can work quickly and confidently, constructing a painting with washes of colour, then adding the fine details. It was the ideal method to show Bin Shao, Jeff Tuffey and Mark Lu - the Westpac managers who volunteered in the class.
At the end of the session, tutor Sasha Iyengar had Jeff and Mark talk about their paintings with the class. Sharing the work and discussing it is a big part of the artist’s’ practice in Leading a Creative Life.
Thanks for helping in the studio and taking part in Guy’s tutorial, Westpac NZ - it was a lot of fun and your paintings are terrific!

This morning’s Leading a Creative Life class were joined by three Westpac managers.
Mark Lu, Jeff Tuffey and Bin Shao volunteered in the class, talked to the artists about their lives, their art practice and, in Mark and Allyson’s case, the really important stuff - their cats.
Westpac managers have been volunteering in our morning classes most of this week, and we are very appreciative of their time, their thoughtfulness and the interest they’ve taken in the artists and the studio.
Thanks very much Westpac NZ!

Four Westpac managers volunteered in this morning’s Studio Practice class and they took on some important duties. We’re going to be adding a new 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 section to our website so Eliane, Chris, Jae and Vivian sat with the artists to get the info on their creative lives.
They had a great time chatting to everyone and Chris had time to help Lynette with her new painting.

Artspace Aotearoa’s director, Ruth Buchanan, saw a photo of a painting, plus several close-ups, on our Instagram page and she very much liked what she saw.
The painting, 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, was by Kerry Deane. This large work on canvas was inspired by the area Kerry grew up in, Kare Kare, and his family’s sheep farm.

Gig Buddies Auckland is a brand-new initiative for Auckland, based on a UK model, which aims to combat social isolation and help people to explore their interests, make new friends, and take part in their communities.
They match people (18 and older) with intellectual disabilities with a volunteer who shares their interests and/or taste in music, so they can go out to gigs and do fun things together.
For more info, please see Gig Buddies’s post below 😃
Today we feature Hana Ellis-Kaa and her stunning abstract works.
Hana is in our Tuesday morning class. Her grandfather was the renowned artist Robert Ellis, whose work includes the stained glass windows in Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland.
Hana enjoyed art lessons with her grandfather from aged two, and she said her artistic journey is inspired every day in his loving memory.
Not only are Hana’s artworks extraordinary, her titles are pretty wonderful too. Her career will definitely be one to watch!

Doors open at 7.30pm, Leonie is on at 7.50, followed by music and open mic.
Poetry Live - at the Bamboo Tiger, 335 Karangahape Road.
Here’s Leonie’s statement: “I am Leonie Brunt, an Auckland-based poet with Samoan heritage, with my late grandfather being from Alepata. I regularly gain insights from reading the writing of Yayoi Kusama and the late Mattie Stepanek.
“For me, poetry is a great form of written expression, as it allows for various topics to be explored broadly while still maintaining depth succinctly. Life experiences and nature are common themes of my own poetry. I can often only access many natural environments with my imagination, rather than physically after being born with Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy (CP) which affects all my limbs impacting my mobility.
“This life event is where the idea for my debut poetry book Touching Things in Time originated. I am also a keen artist and enjoy creating mixed media collage works from my digital and original art.”

Māpura tutor and artist Shiraz Sadikeen will head to London later this year as the newest Gasworks artist in residence.
Gasworks hosts sixteen residencies each year, one of which has, since 2016, been extended to a New Zealand-based, early to mid-career artist.
Shiraz makes paintings and sculptures that mediate their own conditions of production and reception. Often made using ready-made or found materials, as well as various processes of abstraction and formal displacement, Shiraz's work explores the associations between these objects and the situations from which they originally derive.
During his residency at Gasworks, Shiraz will research the current political, economic and ideological circumstances of the United Kingdom, reflecting on its changing relationship to Aotearoa New Zealand.
The three-month, fully funded residency will take place from October to December and is made possible through the generous support of the Jan Warburton Charitable Trust, private individuals who contribute to NZ Friends of Gasworks, Emma Lewisham and the British Council Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific.
