King of the Mountain 2024 done and dusted. Craig and his team at The Smoking Comrades always run an awesome comp down in New Plymouth, we love it.

Big thanks to Hunter for coming down and helping out, top quality dishes and parsley boxes done, cheers brother đŸ€™đŸ»đŸ€™đŸ»

We had a fairly good cook, our chicken had a wee issue halfway through which we had to think quick to save it and managed to get it across the line but not quite how we wanted it. Ribs we were happy with taste and texture but they didn’t want to play the game and sit in the box nicely, which hurt us a bit. Our pork was really good, thanks to Charlotte for some boxing inspiration on that one, and our brisket
well let’s just say there’s some more work to be done there but we’re on the right track.

Chicken 16th
Ribs 9th
Pork 5th
Brisket 12th
11th overall.

Special mention I want to make to Brett from BBQVana for finally hitting that perfect 300 in pork, I know how hard you’ve practiced and worked for that one mate, well deserved.

Well done to Rendered for RGC and our very quiet neighbours the Cook Cartel boys for their GC crown.

Thanks to those who support us

Two things we love at Rolling Coal BBQ are family & community, the opportunity to give back is something we enjoy immensely.
After the chaos of yesterday’s pop-up in Tokoroa, we slowed the pace down somewhat today & had the pleasure of serving lunch,in Papamoa, to our Rescue Helicopter Raffle winner & 19 guests.
We’re proud to let you know that we’ve raised $2000 for the Philips Search & Rescue Trust, as a continued fundraising effort to honour, support & recognise the life saving rescue by the TECT Rescue Helicopter (now known as the Aerocool Rescue Helicopter) that changed our lives in 2021.
Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket in the raffle, I can attest to the life changing impact that this service brings when time is of the essence in an accident situation, your support is vital & means so much to us.

One main goal in my bbq journey has been to get a perfect score. No matter what the protein, I wanted a 300 score.

We got it today on the biggest stage in nz bbq, at Meatstock Hamilton. Could not be happier.

Massive thanks to Shaun Stewart for being there to help me make the calls on what we were up to.

Thanks to Aber Living, The Four Saucemen and all our associated partners for the awesome products we continue to use

When your mates turn up at Meatstock & ask you if you can cook them a couple of tomohawks

Putting a big feed on today in Tokoroa for a new workshop opening. Had to bring in the big guns

07/02/2024

Hey there you bunch of legends!!!

As some or most of you know, Charlotte and I are off to the World Steak Championships in Fort Worth Texas next month, and we’ve been cooking up a storm fundraising, and we’d like to take it another step to lift the numbers in the Rolling Coal team.

Many of you have asked, and we have listened, so can we get a word from you if you would like a Rolling Coal BBQ singlet, Tee Shirt or a Hoodie. The more we get, the better we can price them, which is a win win for everyone.
So show some hands on who would like what and what size, so that we can get our mate Steve from The Creative Alliance on the job

Singlets and T shirts are $40 each
Hoodies are $65 each

Stunner of a day down in Taupƍ yesterday, catching up with mates from forestry & transport. With a mobile kitchen & charcoal pits, we can literally go anywhere to feed the masses. Thanks to Bruce & Lisa for having us & organising an awesome day for everyone.

What an absolute scorcher! We had the pleasure of serving TCL’s Christmas party out at their Hautapu yard today. All the usual suspects on the pits, and a special edition “steak demo”. Thanks to Tony & Suzanne for hosting us, sounds like we’ve converted a few of the crew to charcoal bbq today.

08/12/2023

Ladies first at the buffet table. We’ve had the privilege of catering Jimmy’s retirement function at Truckstops Hamilton this evening. Thanks to Jason & the team for hosting us.

Now that the competition madness of the last month is done we’re locked and loaded and ready to get the fires burning for the Christmas catering season.

Degustation feast tomorrow for Crate day to try and help some healthy people soak up a bit of elbow nectar for the afternoon

25/11/2023

Stoked with the weekends results here in Rotorua, pork has been a bugbear for us forever, but after some careful practice and a lot of learning, it’s paid off.
Time for chicken to get the same treatment

Pretty handy start for Pete here in Rotorua
bring on tomorrow, let it raaaiinnn!!

Bit of an update from the garden city

The last 2 days have been great, always a good time enjoying the company and competition with some of the best people on the planet.

Our top placing for the weekend so far has been a 7th in steak for Charlotte & a 7th place in pork ribs, which we’re absolutely stoked with, considering the field of competitors includes the top 4 teams in Australia and all of the top teams from NZ. Some of the judges didn’t agree with our flavours in our other proteins but hey, that’s bbq, it’s a subjective thing, but we keep coming back.

Yesterday saw a wild wind storm like nothing I’ve ever seen, 6 or 7 gazebos went skyward, regardless of how many men were holding them, BBQ’s were knocked over, meat went flying, it was an intense 15 minutes that’s for sure. Thankfully, by some sort of miracle nobody was hurt. Gazebos can be replaced. Makes me glad I made the drive to take the trailer down that’s for sure.

Tomorrow is the DB180 international, so one more day of battle for Charlotte, and we’ll head north for home again.

Photos from Rolling Coal BBQ's post 15/11/2023

All up and running down in sunny Christchurch at the A&P show, come say Gidday if you’re around for the next couple of days. 38 of the best teams from NZ and Australia here to do battle

And some little pork snails...

Photos from Rolling Coal BBQ's post 07/08/2022

Did a bit of a tutorial video on swift rib prep for a couple of mates on Friday night & thought I better follow through and cook them as well.

Had some leftover pork belly after another cook as well so rubbed & rolled for some little mini pork belly roasts
