The girls at Te Pahī o Aio Nuku, had a dream to empower rakatahi to return home and stand strong on their whenua. They aspired to create a space for rakatahi to grow strong in their Kāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe, Waitaha and Te Rapuwai identity through mahika kai (with the support of the brothers from Arawai), pūrākau, waiata, exploring moeraki whenua, mahi toi, mahi raraka and mahi rokoā.
A core focus for rakatahi leaders Tiana and Jess leading into these wānaka was strengthening rakatahi and cultural connection to one another and to the whenua.

On Monday 21st October the Minister for Whānau Ora / Minister for Youth, Hon Peeni Henare launched a new fund: RUIA. The RUIA fund is a unique partnership between Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu, Rātā Foundation and the Ministry for Youth Development. Ruia – meaning to plant, to sow, or to establish a foundation to develop, is a collaborative fund to enable rangatahi to achieve wellbeing and leadership in Te Ao Māori. The fund is a fantastic opportunity for rangatahi aspirations to flourish – to support ideas from rangatahi, for rangatahi, by rangatahi.
