Department of Science Communication Student Film Premiere 2024 04/07/2024

Here is the trailer to our programme of science communication films - showing in Dunedin at the Rialto on this Wednesday 10th of July.
I'm pretty proud of film I've been working on the past 5 months called "Mokopuna Decisions".

These Sci Comm film evenings have been a real institution of quality film-making in the past. Now that the University of Otago is downsizing the programme, this will be the last hurrah! Love to see you there.

Lights, Camera, Science! SciComm Student Film Premiere | NZ Science Festival 04/07/2024

Hey friends in Ōtepoti - my master's of science communication film "Mokopuna Decisions" is on in the NZ International Science Festival next Wed 10 July at 7:30pm.

"A film by Rhys Latton and Project Kāinga, Mokopuna Decisions centres on the papakāinga of Te Rereatukāhia in Katikati, the home of Te Hapū o Ngāi Tamawhariua.
Through this story the open, thoughtful and dedicated chairman of the marae committee, Hone Winder-Murray, invites us into his world, sharing how it is being affected by climate change and what is at the heart the community’s actions."

The evening is a programme of films made by our Masters of Science Communication cohort and they're all spellbinding and awesome.

I'd love to see you there!

Are You Ready to Shake, Dunedin? 17/04/2024

Hey whānau, allow me to present "Are you Ready to Shake, Dunedin?" - a 10-minute film I made about the 1974 Dunedin earthquake and some of the science around earthquake possibilities in Dunedin. This was made for a summer scholarship with the Centre for Sustainability under the watchful eye of oarsome Caroline Orchiston.

My intention is to make the piece engaging and informative, but also entertaining - including a few 1970s easter eggs for the initiated!
Friends and family were generous with time and memories of the 1974 quake and my son Dimitri made some bespoke music for the film.
Enjoy!

Are You Ready to Shake, Dunedin? On the 9th of April 1974, Dunedin, New Zealand experienced a moderate earthquake. For this self-proclaimed "low-risk" city, nobody was prepared for this…

Summer science: AI and medicinal cannabis 17/01/2024

Rhys made this medicinal cannabis podcast last year in his masters of Science Communication course. Interviewing Dr Peter Radue and Dr Geoff Noller to explore the conundrum of assessing evidence of efficacy for various conditions. Thanks also to our son Dimitri Latton supplying some of his music for the piece.
There's also Rhys' classmate Marika's piece on AI consciousness in the programme - well worth a listen!
Playing tonight on RNZ at 7:15pm or available now on the interweb:
