Our Story
Caversham AFC came into being at a meeting held in the Caversham School Gymnasium on Tuesday February 9th, 1931 when it was decided, after much discussion, to form a Football Club. Mr M Thorn was elected as the President and Mr H Morris as the Honorary Secretary
and Treasurer. There being no other club in the south end of the city it was decided to affiliate with the Otago Football Association and enter two teams, one in Third Division, the other in Fifth Division. The Third Division team finished fifth out of eight teams in 1931.
With an influx of players in 1933, Caversham had its first success winning the Third Division without a loss. In 1934 Caversham moved up to Second Division, remaining at that level for four years until gaining promotion to First Division.
In the 80 odd seasons that have followed the Caversham club hasn’t looked back adding a collection of honours giving it a reputation both at local and national level. Caversham earned entry to the national league on three separate occasions [1972 to 1973, 1975 to 1977 and 2003] and has contested the national knock-out cup (Chatham Cup) with distinction having made the semi-final of this competition on 6 separate occasions [1970, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012].
In recent years Caversham has competed in Federation league football winning the premier division 15 times since 2000 including 3 South Island Championships.
