Mānawatia a Matariki!
It's nearly King's Birthday weekend & what does that mean?????
Yes, my annual Architecture Film Festival binge!!!!
I have 6 films lined up for the long weekend - such an awesome program this year, it was hard to narrow down my list.
I might have to sneak in a few more before the festival ends on 12th June ;)

Several different materials were used for the cladding. The grey cladding is Roofing Industries Multidek, colour Tidaldrift Matt. The timber is actually aluminium Ulltraclad vertical Shadoline with Metwood finish. This means there is minimal maintenance & none of the issues you get with timber.

Mill Creek Crematorium 2022
The Mill Creek Crematorium project for Campbell & Sons Funeral Services was a very interesting one for me. It's not every day you get asked to design a crematorium!
The initial design was started in early 2019 with resource consent being granted in mid-2020 & building consent in January 2021. Construction commenced just as the covid induced material shortages bit the industry, which caused several substitutions to be needed.
The design had to combine the industrial complexes of the building's purpose and the needs of families farewelling their loved ones.
The building site is located within a rural/industrial part of the Taieri Plains. The building is designed so the public section of the building is near the driveway entrance with a covered portico to ensure the hearse & visitors are protected from the weather before entering.
The lounge has extensive soundproofing to reduce the sound of the cremator equipment in the plantroom, which is located at the rear of the building.
The Farewell Lounge is multipurpose, allowing for intimate farewells or small gatherings before cremation. As the site is surrounded by industrial buildings, the north facing windows are designed to capture the sky & hills beyond and the peaceful Memorial Garden screens the neighbouring buildings.
Right from the start of the design process, I wanted to incorporate sculptural elements to reflect the importance of the space. The David Trubridge sculptural light Navicula is a focal point for the lounge, floating lightly over the casket in a protective stance.
These photos show the Farewell Lounge where families can share their last moments with the departed.

Week 1 done & dusted!
Actually, it wasn't that bad - loved getting back to the awesome projects & clients that I am involved with at the moment.
Looking forward to sharing with you the wide variety of projects that range from a simple ensuite addition to a stunning architectural jewel with 180-degree mountain range views.
Ah, LOVE my job!
LOL lucky I get to go to hubby's work Christmas party!
Thank you to NAWIC & Resene for such a fun night.
Great to enjoy the company of other women in the construction industry.
I think Trevor is telling me to finish work for the day . . .
In late October I went to the ADNZ Conference in Wellington.
On the Thursday evening we had a Themed welcome function with the theme being Create, Make and Innovate.
I decided to recycle Resene fan decks into a cloak. I used an old curtain for the base. There are over 360 feathers made out of the Resene fandecks which are individually cut out & sewn onto the curtain. For the top border I joined strips made from the fandecks & wove them into a mat which was sown to the curtain.
I made the fan deck bags into shoulder straps as the cloak is heavy & needed support.
Huge thank you to Elmo (Resene Branch Manager Otago/Southland) for supplying the fan decks!
CURVES Part 4
To truly appreciate the renovation of this project, here are some before & after photos.
CURVES Part 3
My client needed grab rails in the toilet but wanted for them to be discreet. I had rails made to match the towel rails in the bathroom & blend into the vanity joinery design.
The rails have custom-made wall mounting brackets to ensure they can hold a person's body weight.
These can also be unscrewed & removed if desired at a later date.

CURVES Part 2
To ensure my clients had plenty of storage we used a false wall to enclose secret cupboards. With power outlets within the cupboards, everything can be stored away to keep the bathroom uncluttered.

I have not showcased a project for a while.
CURVES Part 1
I absolutely loved working with these clients to create a beautiful new bathroom & toilet.
One of the occupants uses a wheelchair, so I needed to ensure the space had good circulation space & discreet mobility rails.

Look what one of my wonderful clients just dropped off.
I am so blessed with fantastic clients.
It's so much fun working together, bringing out the best solutions for their projects.
I love my job!
WOO HOO!
Just had a building consent granted without any RFI's!
For the uninitiated RFI's are requests for further information from the Council.
In the early years of my career, getting an RFI was mortifying as you had forgotten something or got something wrong. These days they are a standard part of the consent process as you try to explain the building code to an inspector or supply mountains of documents for highly skilled builders that don't need it.
To have none on a consent which included a wet area shower, which can be notorious for RFI's, was brilliant!
I'll take it as a win :)
It's that time of the year again!
Totally love this film festival 😍
I have 7 movies on my to-watch list, perfect way to spend a winters weekend eating popcorn & learning at the same time!

Great way to finish off the working day - on the tools @ Hirepool with NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction).
Had an awesome time trying out the equipment.
Great to see clients living their best lives. I had the privilege to work with Rachael & Shaddon on their gorgeous cottage in 2016. The cottage was a 1900's farmer worker's cottage & we created a large living & kitchen extension to complement the existing dwelling.

I was able to use a beautiful David Trubridge Navicula light fitting in the farewell room. The Builders & I spent some time getting it in the right position.
Have a good break everyone :)
Variation 2 is nearly here. This opens up a lot of potential for existing properties. The level of potential depends on many factors like existing house position, street access, site orientation and topographics, zoning, drainage locations to name a few. However with good design & planning Dunedin will be able to increase its housing stock without sacrificing arable land.
We're announcing decisions on new planning rules which will deliver a welcome boost for housing in the city.
The changes - part of a process known as Variation 2 - are expected to allow for about 1900 new dwellings over the next 10 years.
They also include removing the restrictions on who can live in family flats, more flexibility for development, and 12 new medium density zones, among other changes.
We’re also introducing new rules to protect heritage buildings, provide for greenspaces and ensure solid waste can be collected safely, as well as for well-designed subdivisions and stormwater management.
The introduction of new greenfields development zones will be the subject of a separate hearing later this year.

Out on site today (in between rain showers). Doing a bit of DIY surveying to find out the gradient of the existing driveway.
I did have a bit of a chuckle to myself, I remember moaning in maths classes at school "I'm never going to use this in the REAL world!"
Well I stand corrected Mr Jones . . .
