So, your period is starting and you begin to experience cramps. Why is this happening? According to the American College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, more than half of the worlds menstruators have ‘primary dysmenorrhea’ or generally painful periods. This is thanks to a chemical in the body called 🩸PROSTAGLANDIN🩸 which cause the muscles and blood vessels to contract. Day 1 of the bleed is typically when prostaglandins are at their highest and the levels taper off as the days pass. Next time you have period cramps, just tell your boss that prostaglandins are keeping you from work 👩🏫 Of course there are other reasons you may experience pain during your cycle- such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, PCOS, etc. We can talk more about these conditions in upcoming posts 👉 #prostaglandins #periodaware #menstruation #painfulperiods
