How many rubbish bins and what size?
These days most of us want at least two rubbish bins, but in addition to rubbish and recycling, many people are also separating out their compost and soft plastics.
Also, what capacity will each bin be? Where should they be located in the kitchen? And how easy are they to clean?
The answers to these questions depend on the space available, how many people living in the home and how often you want to be taking the rubbish or recycling out.
Fortunately, there are plenty of options available and your kitchen designer will be able to help you find the best solution for your kitchen and family.
I love this Concelo double rubbish bin from - it’s has two 35L bins and it’s super easy to clean - perfect for large families!
If you need help with your kitchen renovation or build, I’d love to help, so give me call and we can have a chat about how I can help you.

SketchUp series - no. 6
SketchUp is excellent for spatial planning - a really important element to consider in bathroom design is the location of the heated towel rail - ideally as close to the shower and bath as possible.
Through careful planning - adding in the beautifully tiled nib wall and specifying a vanity in a custom size, we knew the Heirloom Genesis Slimline Heated Towel Ladder in Brushed Brass would fit!
And as it’s the family bathroom, the long length of the towel ladder with all those rungs is perfect 👌. More photos of this beautiful space to come….

Got an awkward space and not sure how everything will fit?
SketchUp was brilliant for designing and visualising this stunning powder room - there are a few interesting angles in here, but we were able to draw the space in 3D and then see how we could best arrange the fixtures, not to mention work out the sizes the vanity and custom mirror needed to be and how that stunning batten detailing could work in the space - expertly installed by the owner / builder.

SketchUp is also really useful for visualising how a space can be completed in the future - such as in this laundry design. The clients can see how the fridge and washing line can be added when they’re ready for it.

SketchUp is brilliant for designing and visualising many areas around the house - here I used it to design the joinery and upholstery for a corner bench seat and to show the client how this gorgeous feature light would work in the space.

I use SketchUp to create conceptual 3D visualisations in my design work.
These are converted into 2D floorplans and elevations for the design documentation for the trades, but it’s the visualisations that bring the concept to life and show the client how their new space will look on completion.

I just love the colour of the fabric in this bench seating area - Zepel Deluxe in Peacock - perfect name for it! It’s sitting on Melteca in Planked Urban Oak and the gorgeous wall light in Mojito ties in beautifully.
What a place to sit with friends while sipping on a glass of wine! 👌

I loved working on this kitchen renovation for a fun family of 5 and with all the awesome trades who collaborated on this project.
We opened up the small, separate kitchen into an open, sunny kitchen/living/dining space.
Swipe right for the before shots - you won’t believe the difference! 👌

Kind words from another happy client 🙌
We wanted our kitchen to be modernised and asked Victoria Gaylard to take a look at it and give us some ideas.
After listening to her suggestions we decided we would go ahead with her suggestions and plans.
Victoria totally transformed our kitchen from a dark 80’s kitchen to a modern sleek kitchen with beautiful engineered benchtops and fabulous new cabinetry.
The difference is amazing and friends say that the kitchen looks so much bigger than what it was before.
Victoria was amazing throughout the renovation, following up, checking everything was correct and on time.
We were so impressed that my hubby said it was the easiest reno we had ever done and that he had quite enjoyed it - high praise indeed.
Anytime I need anything else done I will be calling Victoria again. I cannot recommend her highly enough….

Write a caption Horizontal lines 😍😍😍
As many of you know, I am currently doing the Diploma in Kitchen Design through &
In the second year, there is a big focus on the elements and principles of design and this week I have been working on questions about the elements - the first of which is ‘line’.
Kitchens are made up of many horizontal and vertical lines. The horizontal lines feel calm, restful and tranquil - the eye travels comfortably along them, just as it does along the line of the horizon in nature.
Kitchen designers use horizontal lines to keep a kitchen looking calm and cohesive, but we can also add visual interest through the use of different textures, such as woodgrains.
This kitchen is a great example of the successful use of horizontal lines - matching the heights of your drawers ensures cohesiveness and a sense of ‘calm’ - something many designers are very keen on - you might even say we’re a little obsessed! 😉
The grain of the Aged Ash, plus negative detail handles give the visual interest.
The team at did a great job of lining up the lines - and it wasn’t as easy as they’ve made it look!
The white cabinetry was existing and stayed in place, so they had a bit of a job measuring and installing the new cabinetry in Melteca Aged Ash to match - but didn’t they do a great job? 👏👏

What’s behind these bifold doors?
An appliance cupboard!
Not to mention invaluable storage shelves above.
Who doesn’t love being able to hide away their appliances when they’re not in use? An appliance cupboard is a brilliant solution, especially when you don’t have space for a scullery.
And, if friends turn up at your door unannounced, you don’t have to worry about whether you’ve wiped down the benchtop - just close the doors!! 🤣🤣
In this kitchen, Caesarstone is the feature of the kitchen island, back bench and splashback but in the appliance cupboard, we chose the lovely Blanco Marquina, a high pressure laminate from NZ Panels Group. Not only does it tie in beautifully with the Caesarstone, it’s highly durable, feels lovely to touch and it’s cost-effective - win win! 👏👏

Another great before and after of a recent kitchen renovation in a North Shore apartment.
All we did here was remove the black granite benchtop and coloured splashback and replace it with the beautiful Ceasarstone in Organic White - that’s it - how good?!
This kitchen now feels lighter, brighter and so much larger!

We all love a good before and after right? Well this kitchen renovation in a North Shore apartment does not disappoint!
You might be surprised to learn this is not a full kitchen renovation - the existing white cabinetry was in great condition, so this stayed in place.
We removed the black granite benchtops, upstand and coloured splashback and replaced it with the stunning Ceasarstone in Organic White, creating a 4 metre long island with loads of seating space.
The clients wanted more storage and a place to hide their appliances so we added the large appliance cupboard with bifolds and the glass-front cupboard to display their beautiful glassware - all in Melteca Aged Ash.
And because we wanted to keep it all clean and uncluttered looking, we added that Pop Up Power Outlet that I posted in a reel yesterday - good luck spotting it at the far end of the bench!! 🤣
This kitchen now feels lighter, brighter and so much larger and can comfortably seat many friends and family members at the island when they visit.

Where to hang the hand towel in a compact bathroom?
In a compact space, a robe hook next to the vanity (or it could be on the side of the vanity) is a great way to have a hand towel right where it’s needed 👍

Need to make a compact bathroom feel bigger without sacrificing on storage?
The continuity of the same tiles on the floor and walls, as well as a wall hung vanity will create the illusion of more space.
The vanity can still have two drawers and a recessed mirror cabinet will provide plenty of storage.

It's a real privilege to be invited into the homes of clients to help them create new or improve existing spaces - they trust us with the knowledge of their personal spaces and how they live and then we are tasked with coming up with ways to elevate the way they live in their homes.
I love working with clients to help them realise their ideas for how they want to live, by designing and creating beautiful spaces that also function brilliantly.
I loved working on this project and with this lovely couple, so it's wonderful to hear positive words spoken about their experience with me.
