New Arrival ~ These covers are one of the most underrated accessories you can have for a newborn baby! It doesn’t matter whether you are using reusable or disposable, nappy covers are one of our must-have accessories during the [explosive] newborn stage, heres why...

Nappy covers are essentially designed to fit over the top of prefolds, fitted or flat nappies and can actually be reused through multiple nappy changes by just swapping out the prefold (or flat nappy) when wet. It makes for an extremely economical reusable nappy system as prefolds and flats are relatively cheap, plus extremely easy to wash and dry. Perfect for the newborn stage where you could be going through a gazillion changes a day 🤣

HOWEVER… you can also use these nappy covers over the top of disposable nappies to help give that extra protection against explosive newborn poo, because you better believe there will be a poonami with a disposable on in the capsule 🤦‍♀️

Simply pop your disposable on and wrap the nappy cover over the top, when it comes to changing just swap out the disposable (or prefold 😉) and wrap the same cover over the top again.

When choosing reusable nappies from birth we recommend a mixture of prefolds for a fast wash/dry turn around time and to keep costs down and then a small stash of trim newborn nappies for ultra-easy night, nanna, or out and about changes.

Often you will hear the word ‘double gusset’ being thrown around the cloth nappy industry, but what does it actually mean?

Double gussets essentially provide two levels of protection against explosions, however there are two kinds and they both do very different things 🤓

Internal double gussets are line of elastic that runs down the inside crotch lining of the nappy alongside the leg elastics. These really only have one action which is to provide an extra ‘bump stop’ against explosive poo.

External double gussets like pictured, are two sets of leg elastics on the exterior of the nappy, these not only give two layers of protection against leaks, they are also designed to provide an extra panel of space for adding more absorbency, plus the second set of elastics help to keep everything snug against the leg preventing gaps 👌

External double gussets are especially beneficial for the newborn stage as you can ensure a good fit no matter the size of bub, add more absorbency to boost for heavier wetters and feel much more confident leaving the house without any explosions!

Using reusable nappies when out and about ☀️ Often people are a little afraid to use reusable nappies when leaving the house, however it is actually a lot easier than you may think! All you need is a double pocket wetbag, one pocket for clean and one pocket for dirty.

→ Pop clean nappies in one pocket and when it comes time to change, simply store the dirty nappies in another pocket.

Reusable wipes are easy on the go too, store pre-wet wipes in a small wetbag and transfer used ones into the dirty pocket along with nappies.

Poo? No worries, roll the nappy up like a disposable, snap closed and deal with it when you get home. A few extra small wetbags to double bag if you need to helps, but I never bother with this.

When I first started cloth nappies I was a little afraid to use out and about but I learnt soon enough that I was guaranteed a poo explosion in a disposable, especially in the car seat 😐 After changing to full time reusable when out I’ve never had one again!
