I Is For "International Dublin Literary Award".
Mystery Ink's A To Z Of Mystery & Crime

The International Dublin Literary Award is presented each year for a novel written or translated into English. It promotes excellence in world literature and is solely sponsored by Dublin City Council, Ireland.

At €100,000, the award is one of the richest literary prizes in the world. If the winning book is a translation (as it has been nine times), the prize is divided between the writer and the translator, with the writer receiving €75,000 and the translator €25,000. The first award was made in 1996 to David Malouf for his English-language novel Remembering Babylon.

Nominations are submitted by public libraries worldwide – over 400 library systems in 177 countries are invited to nominate books each year – from which the shortlist and the eventual winner are selected by an international panel of judges (which changes each year).

So very many of my favourite books, across many genres, appear on this list that I really rate it as a reliable source for my ever-growing TBR pile!! Hope it adds to yours too !!

H Is For "Horror".
Mystery Ink's A To Z Of Mystery & Crime

Horror fiction is intended to scare, unsettle, or horrify the audience. Historically, the cause of the "horror" experience has often been the intrusion of a supernatural element into everyday human experience. Since the 1960s, any work of fiction with a morbid, gruesome, surreal, or exceptionally suspenseful or frightening theme has come to be called "horror".
We have a great collection of horror novels, several by Mr Stephen King - the King of horror. There has been many a night spent reading a great SK that I have found myself too terrified to turn the light out, and being unable to master the "sleeping with one eye open" strategy, have kept reading well past the wee hours - even with work the next day, but hell, I can sleep when I'm dead, right ??
Check out my great range of "Horror" Fiction below and remember all orders of four or more books are free delivery within NZ ...... If you dare, bahhaaa.

G Is For "Guardian 1000".
Mystery Ink's A To Z Of Mystery & Crime
https://mysteryinkbookshop.com

In 2009 The UK Guardian Newspaper created a list of "The 1000 Novels Everyone Must Read".

Selected by the Guardian’s Review team and a panel of expert judges, this list includes only novels – from any decade and in any language. Grouped into sections; Love, Crime, Comedy, Family & Self, State Of The Nation, Science Fiction & Fantasy and War & Travel.

Now I can imagine you all saying "no-one's telling me what I should or should not read", and believe me, I hear you - I'm one of the original "Don't Tell ME What To Do" people .... BUT, I must admit that I have read 40 or so of the 147 books listed under Crime and almost all would have received 4 or 5 stars from me. So maybe, just maybe they're onto something!!

This is a link to the full list so you can decide for yourself: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2009/jan/23/bestbooks-fiction.

F Is For "Fantasy".
Mystery Ink's A To Z Of Mystery & Crime
https://mysteryinkbookshop.com

Who doesn't need to escape the confines of reality from time to time and delve into the world of fantasy - rhetorical question there as I believe we all do !!!

Dr Suess has this to say of Fantasy; “Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope.” And I would have to say that once you see something differently ... you never see it the same again so your world has changed.

Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Fantasy is generally distinguished from science fiction and horror by the expectation that it steers clear of technological and macabre themes, respectively, though there is a great deal of overlap between the three (collectively known as speculative fiction or science fiction/fantasy).

C Is For Cozy
Mystery Ink's A To Z Of Mystery & Crime
https://mysteryinkbookshop.com

Cozy mysteries, also referred to as "cozies", are a subgenre of crime fiction in which s*x and violence occur off stage, the detective is an amateur sleuth, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate community. The amateur sleuth is usually a very likeable person who is able to get the community members to talk freely about each other. There is usually at least one very knowledgeable, nosy, yet reliable character in the book who is able to fill in all of the blanks, thus enabling the amateur sleuth to solve the case. Cozies thus stand in contrast to hard-boiled fiction, in which more violence and explicit s*xuality are central to the plot. The term "cozy" was first coined in the late 20th century when various writers produced work in an attempt to re-create the Golden Age of Detective Fiction.

Blurb: John Rebus returns to investigate the disappearances of three women from the same road over ten years.

For the last decade, Nina Hazlitt has been ready to hear the worst about her daughter's disappearance. But with no sightings, no body, and no suspect, the police investigation ground to a halt long ago, and Nina's pleas to the cold case department have led her nowhere.

Until she meets the newest member of the team: former Detective John Rebus.

Rebus has never shied away from lost causes - one of the many ways he managed to antagonize his bosses when he was on the force. Now he's back as a retired civilian, reviewing abandoned files. Necessary work, but it's not exactly scratching the itch he feels to be in the heart of the action.

Two more women have gone missing from the same road where Sally Hazlitt was last seen. Unlike his skeptical colleagues, Rebus can sense a connection - but pursuing it leads him into the crosshairs of adversaries both old and new.

Rebus may have missed the thrill of the hunt, but he's up against a powerful enemy who's got even less to lose.

On the twentieth anniversary of Ian Rankin's first American publication comes a novel bursting with the vitality and suspense that made its author one of crime fiction's most dazzling stars. Standing in Another Man's Grave is the triumphant return of John Rebus, and a riveting story of sin, redemption, and revenge."
