Incredible how old is he nearly 80?
We would like you to look at the instruction in the bottom left corner of this delightful image about what to expect in a Bikram class.
What do YOU see when you look in the mirror...let us know, in a comment below.
Let me start the ball rolling...
I see a 75-year-old guy, who is struggling with many postures, due to old injuries, wear & tear, and age, but, at the same time, I know that my students also see an old guy, who is struggling, due to old injuries, wear & tear, and age...and they may think...if he can give it a go, then I had better try too!
These are the students who often come up to Susan and me, after class, and say that they hope they will be able to do what we can do, when they reach our age.
So, I am pretty accepting of what I see in the mirror, and just hope that I can still be doing what I do when I get older ❤

"Bikram Yoga gives you what you need, not what you want."
Emmy Cleaves.
Senior Bikram Certified Teacher & Principal of Bikram's Yoga College of India.
You can definitely get what you want as well but you will have to accept the fact that Bikram Yoga will first heal your body. Wherever healing is needed. After healing the yoga postures will serve as tools to strengthen the body. The sequence of the postures in Bikram Yoga is of paramount importance in order to regulate the endocrine system, flushing the lymphatic system, stimulating the nervous system, strengthening the musculoskeletal system and rejuvenating the digestive system in the most efficient way.
The Bikram Yoga sequence is a genius and so is the Bikram Yoga Dialogue. Bikram Yoga teachers teach Bikram's instructions to guide students through every step of the posture with important breathing cues to ensure a safe yoga experience for everybody.
Bikram's Sequence Works
Bikram's Dialogue Works
Bikram's Torture Chamber Works
Bikram's Certified Teacher Works
Bikram's Yoga Works
You just gotta make sure that you're also ready to WERK!
Because darling ... Bikram Yoga ain't for the lazy.

Hot Yoga Dunedin you guys rock , Love hearing the inspirational stories.
Meet Anet…
Anet is a HYD OG! She has been attending the studio since we opened in 2009.
Anet has completed an outstanding 3163 Yoga/Pilates classes that is a total of 4,550 hours in the hot room! Anet is a true inspiration, proving that yoga is a life long practice. Read her story below…
“I discovered HYD shortly after its official opening in 2009 and have been attending classes regularly since. I suffer from osteoarthritis and have had one hip replacement expecting to require a replacement for the other prior to starting hot yoga. The heat and regularity so far has kept my pain at bay and prevented me from the second surgery. I love the intensity and transformation from everyday life the studio and practice has provided me and stillness of my mind. HYD makes it almost impossible to leave this city!”
We love having you at HYD Anet. Congrats on your amazing dedication and commitment to your practice ❤️
It is important to keep going back to the basics of Bikram Yoga. It is important to some times practice like it was your first class, listening eagerly and enjoying your practice. It is important to be playful at times and not taking things so seriously that you forget it's a healing practice. Don't turn Bikram Yoga into a competitive sport. It can very well be a competitive sport. Elite athletes practice Bikram Yoga and they say that it is the hardest thing they have ever done in their lives. But Bikram Yoga is a healing practice before it can be anything else.
When the body moves and does something new we get motivation from our dopaminergic system. It builds interest and adds meaning. The functions of the dopaminergic system is to create dopaminergic pathways in our brain. Neurological pathways that are involved in both physiological and behavioral processes including control of voluntary movement and creating associations with rewarding stimuli.
Bikram says we have to build up on five mental aspects of the brain to do every asana. Putting these mental powers to use can help you reach deep down your psychophysiological structure and refresh your mental faculties. As a result you have more mental clarity and improved brain function.
1. Faith
How to have /strengthen faith?
Faith is like a muscle, the more you exercise it the stronger it gets. So increase your faith in yourself by telling yourself over and over and over again, “I Can Do It!” Physically say it so you can hear your own voice reaffirming your motivating and encouraging tone. Say it out loud when you’re walking/riding to the yoga school. Before every posture say it mentally to your self so that the brain is busy building positive connections between your mind, body and yoga experience. Positive affirmations are important and give great results. Exercise your faith, your positive affirmations throughout your 90-minutes practice.
2. Self Control
Observe your habits in the hot room. Making sure no one is disturbed by you or anything that you do, is one of the highest forms of yoga in the hot room. It is the sign of a true yoga practitioner who is not only aware of her/his own habits but is also considerate to everyone around them. Excellent yoga room etiquette display a person’s self control. You need tremendous mental strength to build and develop skills like discipline and self-control. Typical examples of building habits in the hot room are, do you drink water after a certain posture in every single class? Are you easily distracted if the corner of your mat doesn’t line with the corner of your towel? Is someone taking your peace away? And you’re letting them? 😋 You are there for YOU! Be selfish about your energy and how you just let it dissipate. Control it. Use it for your class.
BREATHE! BREATHE! BREATHE!
Bring your awareness back to your breath.
Breathe mindfully. Build mentally.
3. Concentration
Your eyes are the windows through which most of your focus and concentration take place. In every posture the Bikram Yoga Dialogue has specific instructions for your eyes. You must have heard “Look up at the ceiling” or “Look in the mirror” or “Look at your stomach” etcetera. So first thing is to give your eyes one point of focus so your balance can improve. Balance is a product of concentration and focus. Your eyes can help you develop strong concentration skills. Learn to not give a s**t about who is watching who and who is doing what. Remember that everyone is trying to deal with themselves in one way or another. And also know that no one can help another person in the hot room. You can only help yourself. You are there for yourself. Build your physical concentration by keeping your eyes fixed at the point instructed to meditate. Wherever your eyes go, your body will follow. If your eyes are distracted your body will be distracted.
4. Determination
A beautiful zen proverb says, “Fall down ten times, get back up eleven times.”
A beautiful Bikram’s quote says, “Falling down means you’re a human being. Getting back up means you are a yogi. Yogis never give up.”
Use your English Bulldog Determination to not give up and keep attempting the postures to the best of your ability. It’s exhausting sometimes yes but it’s the only way you can build your endurance and stamina, physically and mentally. Especially for the Standing Balancing Series, even for Eagle Pose, when you’re trying to balance on one leg and you fall down, get right back into the posture. As babies, when we were crawling and we started to stand up and walk, how many times did we have to fall down to be able to finally balance? SO MANY TIMES!!! Did any of us ever think, “Walking is not for me I’m just gonna crawl for the rest of life.” 😁 This is exactly the same concept, you are just trying to stand up on your yoga legs now, trying to lock your knee and get maximum benefits to your heart, your spine, your glands and organs. The Standing Balancing Series is also the Cardio Series of Bikram Yoga. By design, the heart rate is pumped up by standing on one leg and performing a super powerful front compression, a tremendous and focused backward bend and a strong and mindful stretch of the human spine. So, great opportunities to practice your determination while moving the spine in 3 different ways, standing on one leg. Wouldn’t you agree that something like that takes time? Wouldn’t you agree that something as amazing as all that sounds needs dedication of heart and soul? It needs will-power and discipline to not give up. How do you not give up? Just DON’T! 😋 How do you lock your knee? You either do it or you are trying to do it. Your determination will not improve by just standing and watching others as they try to do the pose. Bikram says, “Do Something” and that’s a great start to build determination. Your Bikram Yoga Teachers will remind you all the time “Do what you can with the body that you have today.” However, mental determination as an aim should not make the physical body suffer to the point of pain. Some times some students need to back off and actually need to not do the yoga to do their yoga because they are either trying harder than their body can take or they are just obsessed with the heat and have turned their Bikram Yoga practice into a sweating ritual. Bikram Yoga is way more than a sweating ritual. You gotta keep yourself in check because no one else can do that for you. Be determined to get the best for your mind and body, no more, no less.
5. Patience
Patience requires compassion and it has to start with yourself. Have compassion for your body’s abilities. Enjoy learning about your limitations and be even more excited to learn how to overcome those limitations. Take your Bikram practice one breath at a time, one posture at a time, one class at a time ... it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey, it’s about how you get there.
One of our senior Bikram Yoga Teachers, Diane Ducharme Gardner says, “It’s not important where you’re going, it’s important how you’re going” in a certain posture.
Bikram Yoga pulls you into LIFE.
Bikram Yoga pumps you full of LIFE.
Bikram Yoga makes you cherish LIFE.
Be aware that your yoga practice will always reflect your life…
If you follow your ego, you may seek to achieve extreme movement, in one direction, often leading to injury.
If you follow your soul, you will seek to achieve a little movement, in every direction, always leading to a healthier, fuller range of movement.
What guides your practice?
What guides your thought?
What guides your life?
Ever wondered why its feels different at home !
