What is the purpose of this study?
Fluctuations in body weight and muscle strength are all too common in patients with IBD. A flare often makes it difficult to eat well, be as physically active as normal, and can result in fluctuations in weight. Additionally, medications to treat IBD flares, such as corticosteroids, often result in rapid weight gain. Recent research suggests that people with IBD have a different proportion of muscle and fat compared with people of similar weight and height without IBD. Although research from other countries suggests that people with IBD eat differently than people without IBD, the eating and exercise habits of New Zealanders with IBD is unknown.
To maintain good health, it is recommended that everyone should aim to eat a balanced diet and be physically active every day. A balanced diet means trying to eat a variety of food consisting of grain foods, dairy products, or fortified plant milks, protein foods and a “rainbow” of fruits and vegetables. However, this can be challenging for many people with IBD.
We are interested in gaining a better understanding of the relationship between diet, physical activity and IBD. Many New Zealanders have participated in our previous research project that investigated access to dietitians and nutritional advice. We would like to once again invite New Zealanders with IBD to participate in this research study. The results will help us make better recommendations regarding diet and exercise.
The IBDeat study is being conducted by University of Otago PhD student and registered dietitian Jia Yap and her supervisors Professor Michael Schultz (gastroenterologist), Dr Catherine Wall (dietitian), Dr Hamish Osborne (sports and exercise physician), Dr Kim Meredith Jones (bone and body composition analyst) and Dr Ella Iosua (senior biostatistician).
The study involves completing online questionnaires about general health, dietary intake, physical activity level, quality of life, and IBD disease activity. These questionnaires can be completed online (see link below) and is open to all IBD patients around NZ. People who live in Dunedin are invited to attend a study appointment at Dunedin Public Hospital to measure body composition, muscle strength, and provide a blood and stool sample to measure their nutritional status and the degree of gut inflammation. Each person who completes the online questionnaires, or attends a research appointment in Dunedin, can choose to receive a summary of their individual results.
