Monisha Gallage Art
This page is an insight into my creative process, inspirations, news and for viewing my unique batik paintings! .
I'm a Sri Lankan batik artist currently living in New Zealand. I have worked professionally in the field of batik for over 3 years.
It was great to be back with the kids.Students of the Kumeu Children's Art Club had opportunity to design thier own Batik tee - shirt @ Kumeu Art Centre last week and kids really enjoyed batik painting and its a excellent creative process to practice patience for kids. These lovely photos were taken during the day one of my Batik workshop and cant wait to finish it this week.
It's been almost a year since I was in my Batik studio due to my pregnancy and slowly getting back in to it.This is the first piece I started off with a 33 x 46 inch wall hanging inspired by Sri lankan cultural elements. I know it gonna be challenging with a two month old baby. But I'm ready to embrace it with love.💕
Wish you all a Merry Christmas...May this day remind us "Wherever there is hatred and anger, we can always combat it with the truth wrapped in love "
Glad to be featured in the Aotearoa Artist – The New Zealand Artists Magazine. Click the link bellow to access digital magazine. (page 38)

Story : According to astrology, the Sri Lankan New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya (the house of Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). It also marks the end of the harvest season and of spring.Avurudda (Sinhala: අලුත් අවුරුද්ද), is a Sri Lankan holiday that celebrates the traditional New Year of Sri-Lanka. It is a major anniversary celebrated by most Sri Lankans. The timing of the Sri-Lankan New Year coincides with the new year celebrations of many traditional calendars of South and Southeast Asia. The festival has close semblance to the Tamil New year and other South and Southeast Asian New Years. It is a public holiday in Sri Lanka.Green is considered as the this new years auspicious Colour.

Another one of my favourite batik projects comming to an end. It was a therapeutic time spent at my studio and sometimes the satisfaction comes from knowing you pushed through sticky bits and made it to the other side.

Wowza! What a week! 😅 We thought our first exhibition of the year ‘Our Aotearoa’ might be relatively small but the entries have flooded in all week and we’ve got 65 works now on display! We’re thrilled with the response and the high standard of entries. Tonight we are holding an opening at 5-7pm so come and see for yourself! 😍
