Yesterday a team of 16 from Tasman Rural Fire came together to hit the streets to check on some of our rural residents. We conducted free home fire safety visits to check if your smoke alarms are working, as well as offer advice to keep your Whanau, home and property fire safe.

We were able to help out over 35 homes by installing smoke alarms, testing or replacing existing expired or faulty smoke alarms. If you’re concerned about your home or just want someone to check to make sure everything is in good working order please don’t hesitate to make contact. We are here to help.

National Volunteers Week
We say thank you to all the volunteers and the business that let them do what they do

17/06/2024

Happy National Volunteer Week to all our volunteers!

We've seen over the past few days how vital our volunteers are to the fire and emergency services in New Zealand. Here are a few stats from our Hidden in Plain Sight report highlighting their importance.

In the words of UFBA CEO, Bill Butzbach "It is clear they are a taonga, a treasure and as a nation, we need to protect and preserve them. The sacrifices our volunteers make cannot be taken for granted."

Thank you all for your commitment and dedication to keeping your communities safe - 24/7, 365 days a year.

We also thank the whanau and employers of volunteers for your support, we know volunteers couldn't do this without you!

Kia kaha, kia kotahi ra
Our strength is our unity

The nationwide test of the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system is happening Sunday, 26 May, between 6-7pm 📱 ⚠️

The alert will be broadcast from cell towers to about 5 million phones across NZ. If your phone is on, capable, the software is up to date you should receive the alert.

Emergency Mobile Alert is an extra channel that can help keep you safe in an emergency. It does not replace other alerting systems or the need to take action after natural warnings.

You should still be prepared for an emergency. If you feel you're in danger, never wait for an official warning. Take immediate action. Find out more about the nationwide test on our website: https://getready.govt.nz/en/prepared/ema

It's that time again folks! Day light saving is here and this weekend we get an extra hour of sleep -weehoo! After a wee lie in, make sure to get up and check your smoke alarms are working, are free from any dust and can be heard from all rooms.

Tag a friend below who you think might need a reminder to check in on smokey ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Please remind the communities you work with, and your friends and whānau to check their smoke alarms this daylight-saving weekend.
Share some of our important messages that can help save lives:
• Fire moves very fast. You only have three minutes to escape.
• You are four times more likely to survive a house fire if you have working smoke alarms.
• Having working smoke alarms in the right places in your home to alert all members of the household as early as possible, is the critical first step in an effective escape plan.
• We recommend households install smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway and living area.
• Landlords are expected to install working smoke alarms and tenants to check them regularly – we recommend once a month.

Tonight’s training was a trip up Rocky River, ensuring the vegitation was clear around the Heli-pad and pond.

This was also an opportunity for our younger crew members to give the Officer In Charge role a go and prep for an upcoming working with aircraft course.

Here at Tasman Rural Fire we recently welcomed Ron to our brigade family, his knowledge and expertise is amazing and the support and guidance he gives us all is priceless.

Ron’s late wife Karen also played a major role in our brigade being the treasurer for several years.

Walking tracks to Split Apple Rock (Moonraker Way track), Towers Bay, Kohi Track and the track at Tokongawa Recreation Reserve are all closed due to the current high fire risk. The tracks in Brooklyn Domain are also currently closed.

Please take note of any signage in place and avoid these areas until the risk of fire has dropped to a level where the tracks can be re-opened.
