Whether you're a drummer or a dancer, this is a unique chance to learn the fundamentals of playing Cuban Rumba percussion instruments. Play rhythms on Congas, Claves, Chakeres, Campanas and Guagua with Havana-trained maestro Vivio in this small, fun and friendly group class in Grey Lynn, Auckland.

Rumba is a living and evolving music and dance form that is being widely taught and showcased around the world. It is filled with stories about life and the real dramas that occur.

Conceived in Africa and born in Cuba by Afro-Cubans in Havana and Mantanzas, Rumba has now become the heart and soul of Cuban life. Historically, it draws on music and related dances from the Congo, Cameroon and Nigeria; as well as Spanish Flamenco.

In 2016, it was placed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and is Cuba’s official dance.

The people who 'danced themselves to death' 15/05/2022

The weirdest story about dancing!!!

‘…one of the things lost during lockdown was the communality of dancing: that exquisite feeling of being physically proximate to hundreds of other people, everyone carried by music that commands the muscles and turns a sea of strangers into fellow travellers bound by shared experience.’

Hola. Sad to hear that there is a new community case of Covid in Auckland found this afternoon. We feel that as we don’t yet know the extent of the case/, we prefer to cancel tonight’s Rumba class as a precaution as the current quarantine cases in NZ are the highly contagious Delta variant. We want to prevent anyone getting sick if it’s out there. But, here’s hoping it hasn’t spread and we’re back dancing Rumba next week. In the meantime, practice your dancing, check out some of our videos on Facebook, and cross your fingers and toes for the best result. Virtual hugs! 🤗
