Tiff reporting from the slopes! Just enjoyed some winter school holiday fun with my kids at stunning Mt Ruapehu. With a warm start to the season, snow was a little scarce on the beginner slopes but staff worked super hard to ensure there was as much as poss with snow cannons working hard out. The good news is, NIWA comments that negative climate change effects on snow levels "may actually be less than originally anticipated" 😶👍⛷ - see article here: https://tinyurl.com/2m9rs7dd

Here at Planalytics we love a good chart because ‘numbers don’t lie’, right? 📈 📉 But we are also aware that, as shown in this TED-Ed video, people can use numbers to misinform or mislead an audience with a little manipulation of their data visualisations. So get savvy for when you’re next presented with a cool looking chart. Are the numbers telling the right story? 🤓 📊 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E91bGT9BjYk

Here at Planalytics, we like to keep our eye on research coming out of Australia and elsewhere on topics close to our heart, including housing, community development, and resource management. The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute - AHURI publishes a lot of high-quality research and most recently has released a study that finds the gap in wellbeing between the precariously housed and non-precariously housed widened over the period 2002–2018 in Australia. In 2020, we published a series of journal articles on wellbeing. One of our overarching findings is that wellbeing is hard to define, and shift depending on context. Imagine our delight, then, when this latest AHURI research provided a very neat definition of wellbeing: Wellbeing is an internationally recognised yardstick of societal progress and policy impact and refers to the ability of people to ‘lead fulfilling lives with purpose, balance and meaning’—in other words, their quality of life,’ says lead author, Professor Rachel Ong ViforJ of Curtin University. Just let that sink in! You can find our journal articles here https://www.planalytics.co.nz/journal/2020/8/31/new-zealands-wellbeing-framework and the AHURI research here https://www.ahuri.edu.au/research/news/Housing-assistance-reforms-needed-to-support-the-wellbeing-of-people-in-precarious-housing?fbclid=IwAR1BmHRZ5_xqBh6twxNm6gpI0V-si0PlcRswJbZ3TCo9xVGY8PhJuTTf4ss

Housing assistance reforms needed to support the wellbeing of people in precarious housing | AHURI Financial constraints and living in the rental sector predisposed people to poorer wellbeing outcomes, while people living alone, low-income households and public renters are most likely to report low wellbeing at a, new AHURI research has revealed.

How are you getting on, adapting to Life under Red? Do you feel resourced, or overwhelmed? As followers of Planalytics will know, we love a good visual - check out this one from Information Is Beautiful. In an age when we're bombarded by information, sometimes it's great to just stick it all in one picture to help see and understand the story behind the figures and in this case maybe clarify our thinking as we move through the Phases of Omicron. 🤓
