A new analysis shows a downward trend in nitrogen loss from Canterbury dairy farms.

The independent statistical analysis by Dragonfly Data Science of OverseerFM data on Canterbury dairy farms, confirms that the data provides an accurate picture of changes in farm systems at a regional level.

We commissioned this analysis to understand how well data represents Canterbury’s dairy industry.

The report shows that our picture of the number of farms and extent of dairy farming is consistent with other sources of information.

Equally important, the data scientists found no evidence farmers were attempting to ‘game’ the model by manipulating their inputs. This helps give confidence in Overseer’s results.

This means that you can rely on OverseerFM data to accurately represent how farmers are adapting their systems over time.

This adds to the findings of the independent science programme that Overseer’s estimates performed well against measured losses of nitrate (oxidised nitrogen).

The primary sector can have confidence that OverseerFM is providing robust and reliable information as a basis for decision making.

The analysis of 1,269 Canterbury dairy farm records on OverseerFM shows a 27.5 per cent decrease in mean nitrogen loss per hectare over five years to 2021-22.

Over the long weekend we have released OverseerFM version 6.5.3 which makes it easier for users to model the storage of maize silage.

This minor model change enables users to harvest maize silage crops "To storage" and then import them as supplements "From storage". Previously maize silage had to be exported before it was "imported" which led to additional CO2 emissions being generated.

As part of our OverseerFM service, all farm analyses were updated to version 6.5.3 where the farm account had a current paid subscription

13th October is Global Fertiliser Day.

The day celebrates the important role that plays in all our lives.

A few fertiliser facts:
🌎 Fertiliser is responsible for over 50% of the world’s food production
🌍 Globally over 238 million people across over 40 countries face food insecurity as a consequence of disruption in food and fertiliser supplies that have resulted from the Ukraine war.
🌏 Plants require 17 essential nutrients to thrive. The use of nitrogen fertiliser on New Zealand farms has dropped 12% in the between 2020 and 2022... More information on fertiliser use in New Zealand can be found here: https://www.fertiliser.org.nz/Site/about-fertiliser/fertiliser_use_in_nz.aspx

was developed as decision support software to assist farmers in managing the nutrient requirements of their farms.

On Global Fertiliser Day we acknowledge the work of all those who have helped to develop the software - to encourage the use of science to achieve sustainable farming systems

Exciting news for our farmers and growers

A recent independent evaluation has given a strong vote of confidence to OverseerFM, New Zealand's leading farm management tool. The evaluation involved a comprehensive two-year study conducted by scientists from AgResearch, Plant & Food Research, NIWA, and Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, in collaboration with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and Overseer Ltd.

The results are in, and they are impressive!
OverseerFM's nitrogen leaching estimates have been rated as "very good" for grazed pastures and "satisfactory" and "good" for crop systems. This is fantastic news for our farmers, growers, and regional councils, as it means you can trust this tool to make informed decisions about your farm management practices, improve productivity and profitability, and enhance your environmental impact.

Jill Gower, the CEO of Overseer, shared her thoughts: "The science programme has re-affirmed OverseerFM’s role as a useful decision support tool that allows farmers and growers to make more informed decisions about their farm management practices, boost their productivity and profitability, and improve their environmental impact."

Moreover, Overseer has been continually improving the farm management tool based on the findings of this science program, with new software versions released in December 2022 and April 2023.

It's great to see our farming community embrace these enhancements, as they provide valuable insights, help track progress, and communicate efforts towards sustainability.

We encourage all farmers and growers to explore how OverseerFM can add value to your operations.

They want your sheep poo folks!!

B+LNZ is calling on farmers to take part in a groundbreaking Facial Eczema (FE) research by collecting sheep poo. It’s as easy as taking a walk in your paddock.

The three-year study will help B+LNZ understand how widespread FE is in NZ. It will help fill gaps in our understanding of its prevalence and inform how we develop tools and solutions in the future to manage this disease.

Great to see farmers in Southland being provided with practical help with the new "Southland catchment context tool" from Environment Southland.

With now rolled out in Southland & Waikato Regional Council, farmers & their advisors need to be able to clearly understand "Catchment Context" and how it needs to be considered in the new plans.

Catchment Context helps localise the required actions - in the case of the Aparima & Pourakino catchments, a need to significantly reduce N losses from farm systems, and also reduce E.coli

is a great way of farmers understanding the opportunities to reduce nutrient losses, while maintaining a sustainable & profitable farm system
