Last term, one of our talented students, Emma Ibbotson, applied for "To the Front" – a girls' rock camp in Palmerston North – and was thrilled to be accepted! Over four inspiring days, she had the chance to dive deep into the world of music, forming a band with fellow campers who shared her passion.
Choosing to focus on guitar (a new instrument Emma is keen to progress with!), she participated in lessons, band practices, and workshops on music technology and performance confidence. Before the camp, Emma had been in a String Group and some musical groups, but this was her first experience with a band. Emma learned a lot about collaborating musically with her band as they created an original song together, building friendships along the way. Emma has now joined two school bands and is grateful for all that she learned about guitar and being in a band.
A highlight of the experience for Emma was performing live on the final evening, where she felt a proud sense of accomplishment in front of a supportive audience. Plus, she had the opportunity to interview with Create Happy Media, sharing her journey and insights.
To the Front not only helped Emma develop her musical skills but also connected her with professionals in the industry, opening doors for future projects. She’s already planning to apply again next year and encourages her friends to join in the fun!
We're so proud of her achievements and can’t wait to see where her musical journey takes her next!

We had the best time at the To the Front Te Papaioea fundraiser last night!!
Huge thanks to Ludus, Bobbi Rae and Harry Wolfe! Thanks to our amazing open mic-ers Tracey and Waihīrere! You both smashed it!
Thanks to Whanganui Tech Services for the lighting, sourbrosbakery for the pizza, and Pride Whanganui for letting us use your space!
We’re getting so excited for the show tomorrow night in Whanganui!
An all Whanganui based lineup featuring:
Ludus is a Whanganui via Wellington electronic music artist. Her music is expansive, understated, elegant, graceful, lush, naturalistic, and stately. There are lots of nice naturalistic field recording sounds as well as sumptuous, soft and spongy electronic tones.
Bobbi Rae is a Whanganui based musician who found her love for music back in her home of Taranaki. She writes her own originals which she says all start with a funky baseline then develops from there. She’s definitely got her own flavour and brings with her an energetic stage presence.
Harry Wolfe is a celebrant, MC, podcaster and singer! She has been singing in the band Rua but it will be one of Harry’s first gigs solo and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for us!
Big Thank you to our amazing sponsors for helping us put on To the Front Pōneke this year. We had a blast 🎸
🎉 We’ve got a FUNdraiser gig coming up in a couple weeks! Whanganui // All ages! With the talented Ludus, Bobbi Rae and Harry Wolfe!

🥁 Another successful To The Front Te Papaioea! 🥁
To The Front Te Papaioea is over for another year and we had a fantastic time!
For 2023, we continued our partnership with Creative Sounds - The Stomach, holding the programme at their venue, and allowing us to access their state of the art practice studios and equipment.
Some feedback we got from campers...
“I got to learn important social skills and how to communicate more easily with people.”
Their favourite part of band practice was...
“Matching everyone’s vibe and creating together”
“Being able to get to know each other and make music together”
They liked the showcase because...
“It gave me an opportunity to expand my prior knowledge in music production and expanded my social environment.”
We are super excited to announce an electric guitar care workshop with our pal Emerald Audio next Month. BYO guitar or bass and join us for an afternoon of guitar maintenance including restringing!!
