Designing functional and enduring products
Built in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Well spring is almost over, and we all know that summer is about to bring some amazing outdoor opportunities!
I have a few specials on at the moment, among one of which is a set of our extremely robust long life outdoor table and bench sets. They have steel frames with aluminium tops to give you the strength needed to go the distance. Did someone say 10 year colourfast guarantee?!?
The table is a 1800mm x 750mm, perfect for those casual dining areas. We've paired that up with a couple of 1500mm benches for 3 people each side. The frames are all in stock and we're ready to coat in the colour of your choice. Top picks at the moment are Woodland Grey or Charcoal, and can do the usual white or black if you're that way inclined.
They're usually $3690 but we're doing this at 20% off retail which brings it down to $2952. This also included free freight to your door, anywhere in NZ, fully assembled. First in, first served. DM, phone or email for details.

Occasionally Awesome Console in black, currently have limited stock in 1500 long, 750 high.
As a lil' bonus, if you're planning on putting TV or stereo equipment on it, I have options for cable management, screw down feet and diagonal bracing. Just let me know via DM or [email protected] and I can add those options for no cost for this offer only. $1440 with free shipping to your door.
A few weeks ago I did a slightly different table design to my usual for a great customer in Wellington. We went with square legs and frame, but with the same aluminium top. All powder coated black on black, looks amazing in their home!
Currently doing a production run for a certainly small (okay not actually small at all) coffee establishment based in Tāmaki Makaurau but available all over Aotearoa. Check out your local outlet for some hot brews!
These are a more compact size than the previous ones (750x550), and are now available to order. There are a few spares at the moment, so get them while they're warm. Ready in a week or so.

Here's a little winter warmer for you! I really need to make some space in the workshop for some top secret projects (!!) and so I have one outdoor table and bench set up for grabs for a hot winter deal.
These outdoor furniture sets are extremely robust and designed to last many years outside. Steel frames with aluminum tops give you the strength needed to go the distance.
This one's a 1.8m x 750 full set with benches, ready for top powdercoat colour of your choice. They usually sell for $3690 but I'm doing this one set only at a 20% discount for $2952. This also includes free freight to your door, anywhere in NZ. First in first served, DM, phone or email for details.
Currently have 1x console left in stock from the last batch and it's currently ready to get out the door.
1500mm long (that's the big one), matte white, 3 shelves of good memories.
$1440 with Free Shipping.
Shipping time of something a little bit different... But kinda the same! Here we have a 1200 console in black, with a custom height (to fit 33's and a bit of hi-fi gear) and a bit more bracing for the heavier loads.
It's always a challenge when you have a very minimal design aesthetic to make it rigid too, but I think we have a good balance of function and form here.
What do you think? Would love some feedback.
I have been fortunate enough to work Anna and the amazing team at over the last few months, putting together a solution for one of their customers. They totally support local, and have been great to work with. So now I need to get busy making a few 1500mm consoles! Big reveal in a few months :)
Well this looks like a very cozy place to relax... grab a book, have a coffee...
This smpl. install with (3m wall rails no less) was done by the customer and I reckon it looks pretty 🔥
I did another customer install in Auckland a few weeks ago, this time with 2 large bookcases of smpl. shelving. Wendy was able to map out for me exactly what she was after, right down to the different shelf spacings to match their quantities of large and small books!
I love doing the customer installs, having a chat, getting to know them... and the coffee is usually pretty good too!
This could well be in the running for my fave console configuration I've done so far. Smokin' it with 1800 long, triple tier, 6 support legs and a whole lotta white!
Although this technically isn't on the menu, it's really easy to come up with different arrangements, both in terms of length, width and height. Just get in touch if you'd like something a little different... or the same 😁

Packing up a few orders today after some pretty long manufacturing delays and found pile of these little guys just hanging out ready to go to their new home.
I take these for granted (which is pretty normal for a screw TBH), but occasionally I step back in my mind to the many many ideas (good, average and very bad) prototypes and trials I did to get them just right. They start with long rods of brass that are CNC machined and threaded just for me right here in Napier, with a lot of love, so I'm told.
I use local suppliers every way possible and these are no exception. I think you could do a long throw from the workshop and reach the machine shop, the laser cutting and also powder coat. Onekawa for a big win. Stay local, yo.
Occasionally Awesome? More like always awesome! More another batch of consoles underway at the moment, so if it's something you've been thinking about, feel free to get in touch. Have been doing various lengths 900/1200/1500/1800 and also 2 or 3 shelf variants so hopefully something to suit your situ just the way you want it.

Soooo.... let's get this Facebook train up and running again! Here we have a super cool setup for the one and only Kokako Organic Coffee Roasters I installed a few weeks ago. I know you know them well, they do a pretty mean roast and keep it organic along the way.
To keep on-brand, I worked with Craig to get a super close powder coat match to the Kokako grey, which turned out very much on point. It's the first non black/white smpl. system and I love it.
Scroll across for how they stack the shelves and stock their cabinets in their test kitchen. You'll see this if you place an order online and do a roastery pickup in Mt Eden. Say Hayden says Hi and you'll receive an extra free smile!
First major job out for the year, this one is the latest batch of Mojo street signs, all 25 of them. Had a few delays getting them through towards the end of '21, but here they are now, ready for the streets!
Had these pics come through from a very happy customer a few weeks ago of their new 6x5 smpl. bookshelf kit. I'd just like to stop for a minute and appreciate the colour coordination (this is only half of it, you should see the other shelves!) This was another customer assemble and install, and by all accounts went very smoothly.
Had a great quote from the customer "I’ve finally got the shelves up and I’m super stoked with them - they are everything promised and more! My mate who gave me a hand to put them up (an engineer no less..!) was very impressed with the design and how simple they were to install plus the attention to detail in the design - think he is keen to get some shelves at some stage..! And he was blown away with the way everything was packaged - kept saying whoever packaged this must really love his job..!"
And that I suppose is why we do what we do. Happy customers. 😁
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to produce a variant of my street signs for , 40 of them in fact! So this little gift has kept on giving, and here we are again with another 25 signs. Production this year has been quite hard with lead times, freighting, damaged parts etc, so a big thanks to them and all the others for believing I can get the job done and to an excellent standard.
In the next few days, they'll be going out to all the outlets all around the country, so if you see them around over the Christmas break, tell 'em I say Hi 😁
Put together a new standing desk this week (prob more bar leaner for when you have friends over!) for a local customer here in Napier. Did a bit of a dance with colours, sizing, heights etc and finally settled on 1600 x 700 on a steel frame. The tubes I make the frames out of are laser cut, so they're extremely accurate... which I suppose is a good word to describe the whole table really. Really nowhere to hide on this design, very little room for error. Came out looking really sharp though, very pleased.
There's been a fair few delays in getting products out the door these last few months in particular, so thanks everyone (including Mark for this one) for your patience.
Well after delays on delays (thanks for your patience y'all) I'm finally rolling out the next batch of the Occasionally Awesome consoles in a variety of lengths and this pretty spesh oh-so-white for the one and only Devyn .glass.
Jump over to the next image and you'll see what's heading this console's way! More than slightly amazing.
Watch this space over the next few days, I have some longs and some lows coming through too.
What better way to start a long weekend than with a bit of outside dining in this amazing location? A fresh new table set was delivered last week, and it's certainly making the most of the great outside space they have created.
It was a bit of a privilege to make this, as I made it for my favourite neighbours Llew and Andrea who have one of most stylishly decorated homes around. Creating a simple design aesthetic in products is always much more difficult than people realise, but that was exactly what was needed here.
In terms of sizing, this one's pretty large, coming in at 2.4m x 900mm for the full dining experience. Perfect for those long summer barbecues.
If you're looking at outdoor furniture for your home, feel free to get in touch or check out smpl.nz.
I was so pleased to receive this image this morning, just had to share it. It's the culmination of literally months of planning, waiting, shipping, parts supply issues, waiting, lockdowns, more waiting, more shipping and finally... install. Priya and Michael certainly had a lot of patience, and for that I am very appreciative.
This is the second smpl. shelving install in their master bedroom, and it looks super fresh. The ceilings are quite high so we went for 1875mm rails which gave generous hanging space and still enough room for all the cabinets. Yes, that's 12 of them, 600mm wide, 3 different heights. The new hanger shelves also work really well in these configurations, very flexible height wise and match the style of the open shelves well.
If you're thinking of a similar setup, free free to get in touch. [email protected]
Occasionally Awesome Console in 1500 black.
Get 'em.
So last week this little thing got a whole lotta love... so much so that I put together a bit of a product range and made it official. It's been a style of shelving I have wanted to do for a while now, so good to get it out there.
I'm doing 3 sizes (900/1200/1500), all 750 high x 350 deep.
Pricing starts at $990 which includes GST and freight to your home.

So what are we calling it? Console? Shelf? Either works, but for now it can be Occasionally Awesome.
Big Wall, big shelves. Yep, 30 shelves covering 3m of wall space giving 18m of legit booking space.
These type of systems are a great way to get those boxes of books out of the garage and on display.
This was another kit ordered directly off the website, as it happened to be exactly what the customer was after. But hey, if you want to go even bigger, just give me a call.
Wardrobes you say? Repeat customer? When you have a room that need a bit of matchy matchy, we have a chat.
Dropping in with 12 drawers for extra extra clothes storage, this config is taking up a full bedroom wall.
Incorporating a few shelves and the 'not prototype anymore' clothes hangers, it's going to make full use of the real estate available.
Another customer install too, becoming quite the norm these days which is great to see. Well done team, we're winning.
When you've just gotta go wiiiiide, you go 9 hundy. Drop in a few wall rails and you have yourself a nice little 1.8m setup ready for all the things.
This one was ordered straight off the website as a kit, but as always, feel free to get in touch if that's not your bag. Always happy to accommodate all your weird and wonderfuls.
Looking all right in white! 1650 rails, 4 shelves and a couple of good size drawers made this setup quite the practical wall unit. The usual exposed edge birch ply drawer fronts made this look very crisp indeed.
Off to Wellington, the capital of smpl lately!
Did someone say snap? Yes, definitely looks like the last set, but much taller! Craig has some pretty high ceilings so needed 3m long wall rails to reach for the roof. Definitely ladder material getting up there, but that's an adventure in itself I suppose 👍
And to follow up on the last set, here's another. With this config being designed to fit into a a full height bedroom alcove, it's more reading material storage, and perhaps a couple of house plants... (we'll see about that say's Sam!)

Bio
theGenesis is all about appreciating the role good design has to play in products. My name is Hayden, and I'm just a guy making my way in the world... one design (and build) at a time. I am very passionate about products being not just long lasting, but rather adapting and evolving as you do in life. My family and I recently built our own home, and through that process learned a lot about use of space and simplicity, but also about bringing warmth and personality to your living through having a bit more of your life on show. I seem to approach things from an engineering perspective, hence seeing a lot of modularity and multi-use in what I do. Form is important, but it is just art unless it has function. I'll be showing more of my work in the next few weeks, mainly the new smpl. shelving and storage system I have been developing. There's been a lot of my time in development, but I am fairly excited about where things are headed :)
