Recently, Brent from Attach2 caught up with Liam McCord, our Bay of Plenty Area Manager, and Sam Mitchell, one of our Trade Qualified Foreman, to gain insight into how our teams collaborate to deliver successful projects and outcomes for local communities.

Having discussed the topic at length with the team, some clear themes emerged which are eloquently summarised by Brent.👇

"After catching up with Liam and Sam to talk about working on these collaborative projects, it becomes clear that establishing key relationships with others that share a passion for machines, as well as for the communities involved - leads to success. Not only is this success evident in the projects themselves, but on a larger scale - creating lasting impact for the Bay of Plenty locals who can enjoy them for years to come."

Last week we had the privilege of being a part of the Pasifika Navigators of Tomorrow event in Tauranga.

The event did a brilliant job of showcasing the many different career paths available to our youth, while also inspiring and arming them with the relevant knowledge to chase their dreams.

Danny Kayes and Bay-Leigh Johnson, from our Bay of Plenty team, flew the flag for CB Civil as they shared valuable insights from the world of civil construction with the bright and ambitious students in attendance.

Many thanks to Pasifika Navigators for hosting us, and to the students we had the pleasure of meeting - we cannot wait to witness all of your future successes in our exciting industry!

Designed for people walking and biking, the 66m-long, 110 tonne arch bridge will also carry a critical wastewater pipeline, for the 20,000 future residents in Peacocke.

Thank you to our project collaborators Beca; WSP in New Zealand; Gray Matter Ltd; Eastbridge Ltd; ICB; Titan Cranes New Zealand, NZ; Hoffcon; Reliance Reinforcing Ltd and Riley Consultants.

We look forward to doing it all again with you shortly.

Thrilled to announce the victory for David Benioni this weekend, scoring 278 out of 300 points. What makes Dave's win even more impressive is that he was the first competitor to take on the course, setting a standard without having seen any other attempts.

This win marks a significant improvement from last year's 6th place, demonstrating Dave's dedication and skill growth. He will now represent Auckland at the 2024 Nationals during the Central District Field Days in Feilding, 14-16 March.

Please help us congratulate Dave on his success and support him as he prepares for the Nationals!

We spoke with David Hopper, a Project Manager from CB Civil, who is currently working on the RNGIM rail upgrade project for Kiwirail. This initiative involves upgrading the existing rail network in Orakei to accommodate the increased demands additional trains will place on the Tāmaki Makaurau rail network once projects such as the City Rail Link are completed.

CB Civil has an established reputation and partnership with Kiwirail with proven expertise in rebuilding and upgrading rail formations and drainage foundations. We previously completed a similar program of work between Amberley and Picton following the Kaikoura Earthquake in 2016. Having been involved in the delivery of the RNGIM upgrade programme in Tāmaki Makaurau metro area over the last 2 years, the team are delivering a package of upgrade works around Orakei and Meadowbank utilising a planning shutdown of the eastern rail line to complete the bulk of this work between March and end of September 2023. A noteworthy part of this package involves rebuilding the rail formation inside the 600-meter-long Purewa Tunnel, a task that demands meticulous planning and coordination!

Once the team completes their work on this section of the line, they will move on to the next and repeat the process. There is still a significant amount of work to be done before we reach completion but we are very proud of all the hard work that team has done already! 🚂👏

A typical day shift for David and the team working on the RNGIM rail upgrade project for Kiwirail: His workday starts at 0630hrs with a briefing and concludes at 1700hrs. If a night shift team are working, then a handover is done before the next team carries on. Weekend work is common especially where critical work needs to be completed outside of busier operational times on rail. ⚠️

David mentions an interesting aspect: due to the presence of numerous conductors carrying electric cables that power the trains overhead, as well as the rail lines on the ground, the team must evacuate the site for 30 minutes whenever there is lightning during adverse weather conditions. This is a hazard they don't typically encounter elsewhere.

On an average shift, each team on site moves and places around 400 tons of material, including excavation and replacement of aggregate to rebuild the foundation under the railway lines. With two CB teams currently working on this rail section, they are collectively moving 800 tons of material each day! 💪

Before CB Civil, David worked in Rarotonga for 3 years before returning home to New Zealand. 🌴 Whose profile do you want to see next? Let us know in the comments! 👇

📢 Another Exciting Day at Kahika! 🎓🚀

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting two young students from Massey College, eager to explore potential career paths. It was a great experience to walk them around our site, giving them firsthand insight into our site and industry.

During the visit, they had the opportunity to witness the process of potholing and learn about the intricacies of clash analysis. Seeing these techniques in action truly opened their eyes to the world of our industry and the importance of the hard work they are putting in at school.

But that wasn't all! They were also thrilled to get up close to CDS New Zealand Ltd impressive 55t HDD rig and mud shaker.
We're thrilled to have been able to inspire these students and show them the endless possibilities in our field. It's great to see the curiosity of the next generation.
Together, we're shaping the future of our industry by nurturing young talent.

At the start of 2020, Kory joined our team as a Civil Pipelayer with a specialisation in Drainlaying. In his first year with us, Kory enrolled in a Drainlayers Apprenticeship and committed himself fully to the program, ultimately earning his certification in December 2022.

We've seen many employees embark on apprenticeships in the past, but few have demonstrated the level of dedication that Kory has shown in pursuing this milestone in his career.

Recently, Kory achieved his Plumbers, Gas fitters, and Drainlayers – Tradesperson Accreditation, which now elevates his status to "Trade Qualified." Our company strives for all personnel to attain this level of proficiency through our training and career development programs.

Kory's unique background as a Drainlayer by day and arm wrestling champion by night begs the question: how does he balance both pursuits at such a high level of achievement?

According to Kory, it all comes down to his insatiable desire to learn and excel in everything he does. "It's a never-ending journey of seeking knowledge," he says. "I take that mindset with me to work and to my sport. I love learning new things, and if I put my mind to it, I will achieve it."

We encourage all of our staff to pursue formal training and upskilling opportunities, and we pledge to support each milestone along the way, whether it's on-site or off-site.

Mahu Rawiri and Zaelene Maxwell of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki led the Kahika project team and members of Te Rua Whetū in a blessing ceremony of the site. The purpose of karakia was to acknowledge the tapu (sacredness) of the whenua (land), and seek guidance and protection throughout the construction process. By attending and witnessing the ceremony, the team demonstrated recognition of the spiritual connection between the people, the land, and their ancestors. It also solicits their blessings for the success, safety, and well-being of the project. Additionally, the karakia serves as a sign of respect for Māori customs and traditions, and establishes a positive relationship between the project and the local community.

CB Civil celebrated the end of 2022 by bringing together the team from all the regional bases for a day of fun and team-building at Kauri Bay Boomrock, a sheep and beef farm that also hosts bespoke corporate events.

On the first day of Semisi Finau’s Future Ready – Life Online course, he’d called it quits by morning tea time. We wish you all the success in your future endeavours Josh Nicodemus

Josh has been with us since June 2018 where he has fulfilled many different roles within the company. Starting off as a drainage labourer out at the Karaka Subdivisions, Josh put in the hard yards each day alongside the team. He then moved into a site admin role where he helped file documents and ensured daily prestarts were completed to a high standard. He started his Engineering Cadetship with us as he progressed his career in the civil industry. While studying he would try his arm at tendering, where he thinks due to his beautiful service marked up drawings and help with Alister he secured us the Hunua 4 project. After tendering Josh entered a Cadet site engineering role at Ameti where he oversaw QA and site documentation. After realising engineering might not be the path Josh wanted to follow, he started his Bachelor of Construction (Construction Management) where he is almost finished. Josh then moved into a stakeholding management role at the Okahu Bay project where he excelled. His dedication to this role minimised the number of complaints and he was a key member in this award-winning project. He has continued a great relationship with Auckland council and was a key member in securing future work with Ōwairaka and Block house bay.

Introducing Liam, our Tauranga Lead Project Manager! 👋 Liam has been a valuable asset to the team over the past two years. After finishing his Mechanical Engineering degree with 1st class honours his skillset grew rapidly in various impressive roles before arriving at CB Civil. Liam was drawn to the company for the opportunities to work on large scale projects and he accomplished this when he worked on the award winning Peacocke Waste Water Rising Main Project. Liam then moved to Tauranga to be the Tauranga Lead Project Manager and is currently managing 4 different projects.

What Liam likes most about working at CB Civil is the level management structure, the owners are working at the coal face and there’s the ability to move quickly and adapt dynamically. Outside of work you’ll find Liam growing his kiwifruit orchard, fishing or hanging out with his sons. 🎣🥝
