The New Zealand Underwater Heritage Group have a keen interest in and are regular visitors and supporters of the Daring. Their annual conference is coming up on the 2nd and 3rd November. This year the key note speaker is Professor Bridget Buxton who among her many achievements is one of a very few who have dived to the wreck of RMS Titanic.
The conference is open to all interested members of the public. Here's the link to the programme, background to the speakers and registration: https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/1046453680127?aff=oddtdtcreator
At the weekend, the Waitemata branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand paid a visit to The Daring. As always, we loved the opportunity to share our historic ship with lovers of historic cars. There may have been some of our team quite interested in their cars too!

Our volunteers have just finished setting up for this weekends Whangarei Maritime Festival. The display is hands-on - so kids of all ages are welcome to come and explore our 1/4 scale replica windlass, chip log (for measuring speed) and view some of the items conserved from The Daring.
Pop by to see the team - they would love to take you through the story and our plans for The Daring Discovery Centre!
Steve Marten of Marten Marine in collaboration with Craig Loomes of Lomocean Naval Architects and maritime historian Baden Pascoe has completed an incredibly thorough study of the Daring, including taking line drawings by hand, manipulating point cloud data from laser scans, studying photos of the vessel on the beach and studying books on schooners of the same era. The result is an incredibly detailed 1:24 scale model which went sailing at Judges Bay Auckland this week. Roger Mills of Hummingbird Video and Photography has captured her in a way that creates a real understanding of how she performed in the mid 1860's. The model will ultimately be on display in the Daring Discovery Centre at Mangawhai.

The team at HPFS Solutions-Heritage Conservation are doing an incredible job conserving the items found in The Daring. Here's a wee explainer about some of the work that goes into conserving a leather strap.

Steve Marten's detailed and accurate recreation of the 1863 Gaff rigged schooner the Daring has been beautiful captured underway by videographer Roger Mills. She was certainly a graceful vessel with beautiful lines and great load carrying capability.

We've got an amazing opportunity to set up a stand at the inaugural Auckland Wooden Boat Festival to share the story of the Daring. The festival runs from the 1st to the 3rd March. We will be indoors in the Viaduct Events Centre and need your help to man the exhibition on one or more of the days and help to set up and pack down.
This is an opportunity we don't want to miss in sharing the story of the Daring. PM if you are able to help us out.

JOHN STREET MNZM
Dear friends of the Daring
It was with sadness that I learned of fellow trustee John's recent passing, and I know his passing will be deeply felt across the boating and wider community.
When the Daring started to emerge from Te Oneone Rangatira Beach it was John who recognised the importance of her to New Zealand history as the only surviving vessel of her type and the stories she can tell of coastal trading and life in general in the mid 1860's.
John gathered a small Daring Rescue Group around him back in 2018 and undertook the huge project to recover the vessel at his own expense. Without John's efforts the Daring would have been lost forever.
John's big heart, leadership, generosity, loyalty, and trust in others has been an inspiration to all around him. A giant kauri has fallen but will not be forgotten by the many whose lives have been enriched through their association with him.
Rest in peace John. It has been a privilege to have worked with and shared the Daring passion and maritime history with you.
There will be a memorial service for John at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, at 3pm on the 18th of February.
My sincere condolences go to his wife Lorraine and family.
