WOW!! What a wild Wild Auckland that was aye! Started off lovely and then at lunchtime got pretty crazy!

This has just been emailed to all participants.

Thanks for coming to the last event in the Bivouac Outdoor Wild Auckland Series . It sure lived up to its name!

We started the ultra runners at 7am at Huia with a beautiful sunrise. The other distances started at Piha from 9am in similar stunning conditions. By midday it was a full on storm, with runners finishing in these cold windy conditions right up until 5:15pm. Well done to all of you for battling through all that!
The massive rain and wind destroyed the timing tent and flooded the laptop and timing decoder box (the brains of the system). At one stage we had 5 people struggling to hold the tent down (after the pegs were ripped out) waiting for the wind to die down enough for us to tie it to a ute to make it safe 😲

All devices seem to be working now after drying out and the timing system looks to have continued capturing everyone’s finish times, with only a few of our manual recording needed. But let us know if any of your results don’t look right.

You've hopefully already found the results on the website but if not they are here https://www.lacticturkey.co.nz/wildauckland/results

As if the weather wasn't enough, we also had people interfere with course marking including one resident, who has since confirmed to me he threw the junctions course markings away at the mid-point of Rose Track and hence runners took many different routes ☹ Apologies for this - I warned everyone at briefings and in the pre-event email that this might happen and top marks to those of you that took the provided course maps or studied the course to ensure you ran the right route. The encouraging thing was most people finished and despite the hassles said they still loved the course and being out there in the elements. Says a lot about all of your great attitudes!!

We must apologise for the lack of atmosphere at the finish once the storm hit. Due to having all hands on deck to sort out equipment and keep people safe we didn't have the usual vibe of music, an entertaining prizegiving, handing out the 0% beer, one of us greeting people and a great atmosphere. Realising afterwards that we hadn't maintained this left us a bit dejected after the event because it's so not our style. But the weather and all the extra tasks it made us do conspired against us. At around the time the wind and rain really fired up, we had a bunch of people holding down the timing tent, because it had flown half away, pulling out it's pegs and breaking half it's feet off, flooding the speaker, timing gear, laptop etc. The priority was stabilising this, assisting the person who was timing because they got hit in the back by the flying tent leg, trying to dry stuff off and see if the system was still working and manually recording times of finishers. Apologies again to those who missed out on a 0% beer and fun vibe.

Because we couldn't have a prizegiving we have done a spot prize draw on the computer. See below for the list of winners and we'll be in touch to get your address and post out your prizes.

A massive thank you to our sponsors. Main sponsor Bivouac Outdoor who provided a bunch of awesome spot prizes each event. Supported by Roam State Of Play Beer Tailwind Nutrition NZ CurraNZ IronOak Financial Services and Ascend Fit. You are all legends and without your support we could not possibly make this such a great series and we ask that you all support these companies so they see the value in continuing to support our events.

A massive thank you as well to all our volunteer marshals. It was a 9 hour day in some tough conditions for our volunteers. They are amazing and we are so grateful for the time and the smiles you gave all day.

One of our marshals out on the course was Tina Buch who is doing her master's research on how nutrition knowledge influences health and performance in trail runners and walkers in Aotearoa. It would be amazing if you could please by completing her survey to help her study.

Trail NZ nutrition survey for NZ trail runners and walkers
Kia ora, I’m Tina – trail runner, NZ Registered Nutritionist and Master of Science in Nutrition student at Massey University. As part of my master’s research, I’m looking for trail runners and walkers of all experience levels to take part in this exciting new study investigating how nutrition knowledge influence health and performance in trail runners and walkers in Aotearoa.
If you’ve already completed this survey – thank you!
The survey will be closing mid-December and I really need a few more responses so I am hoping if you haven’t yet completed the online survey - if you could spare approx. 30 minutes to help me out – I would really appreciate it:)
To participate you should be:
- 16 years or older
- Based in Aotearoa / New Zealand
- Training for trail running/walking at least 2½ hours per week
We have one more prize draw to go where you can win one of two $100 vouchers. Please click this link to find out more information about the study and take our online survey https://massey.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1HWj3w8pTw6UOai
Thanks to all my fellow trail runners and walkers for your support!

Not long now until our last event of 2022 is a trail run/walk at Piha as the final event of the Bivouac Outdoor Wild Auckland Series on the 27th November. This includes the 50km ultra which goes from Huia to Piha.

This is a big one with many junctions so we're looking for groups or individuals to help. We have one volunteer group for this but need many more people to help with marshal points and aid stations.
Would suit a group looking to fundraise. Maybe a sports group, scouts, music group or school trip?? We give a donation to the group for their services.

We need up to 20 people to marshal runners out on the course or mange an aid station.

The volunteers get lunch provided and on race days, it's usually from around 7:30am to 2pm. For individuals we give credit to our future events as a thank you!

If you know of a group who might be keen - email me on [email protected]

Here's a cool detailed report from one of our Wild Auckland CurraNZ runners - Emily, who has been trying Curranz since after the first event in the series. Don't forget if you are keen to try them yourself there is a special offer for Lactic Turkey Events fans - get 20% off your first purchase of CurraNZ 30 caps with code 'Lactic'. Order on the website at https://curranz.co.nz/

Now from Emily...
"I'd seen CurraNZ around on the Instagram pages of several runners I follow and been really curious to try it for myself. When the opportunity came up to test it out over the course of the Wild Auckland Series I jumped on it straight away!

While I waited for my CurraNZ to be delivered, I read a few research papers specifically done on New Zealand blackcurrants so I could understand their benefits on a physiological level. For anyone who doesn't know me, I'm a Master's student in Strength & Conditioning, and self-confessed exercise science nerd. I was impressed with the meaningful results the studies reported (increased fat oxidation, greater endurance performance, improved recovery and perception of muscle soreness). One study even focused on females and this increase in fat oxidation was still present, which is awesome because females naturally lean more towards fat oxidation than males, and some supplements don't work as well for us as they do for men! TLDR; Blackcurrants are a well-supported sports supplement for endurance performance, for both females and males.

Personally, I immediately noticed an improvement in the severity of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) I would normally experience after long trail races and heavy strength sessions in the gym. I'm really looking forward to seeing some performance benefit once I overcome a little knee injury I've picked up as well. I would highly recommend CurraNZ to any runners wanting to improve their recovery and reduce DOMS!"

The course is marked and we’re ready to go! It stopped raining at Te Arai at 2pm so we only had a couple of hours wet to start. Since then we’re dried out in a bit of wind. The trails are looking awesome - no mud and lots of variety under foot!

See you in the morning!

Only a couple of days to go for the 3rd event in the series at Te Arai Regional Park on Sunday 2nd October! Entries are open online until 5pm tomorrow at http://wildauckland.co.nz/ and then we take entries on the day at the venue!

We're busy packing and collecting supplies...including from a new partner for the event, State Of Play Beer which is a 100% zero* alcohol beer, that tastes like beer should — full of flavour! We can't wait to hand these out at the finish line and see what you think!

* contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume which is less alcohol orange juice, a ripe banana and sour dough bread 😲

Whose keen for trail run/walk then a recovery swim?! 😲 We have our third event in the Bivouac Outdoor Wild Auckland Trail Run/Walk Series this Sunday, at the beautiful Te Arai Regional Park. This place is a hidden gem and has recently grown in size with a new section we make use of, in the Expedition course. Check out the scenery at this venue 👀 The water at the beach in so clear you won't be able to resist a swim afterwards. The water is less than 100m from the finish line😲

Choose your distance from 24, 12 or 8.5km and for the kids, a 2km Kids Dash.

I mentioned at prizegiving on Sunday that our newest sponsor for the Bivouac Outdoor Wild Auckland Series is CurraNZ. And as a promotion for the Wild Auckland Series and to share what results you can get from CurraNZ, we're looking for 4 people who are doing the four events in the 2022 series to become Wild Auckland CurraNZ Runners. You'll receive free CurraNZ from now through to the last event and all we ask is that you share your experience throughout that time with some small reports after each event.

To become one of the four Wild Auckland CurraNZ Runners email shaun@lacticturkey with a bit of a running background, what courses you're doing in the Wild Auckland Series, your goals for the series, what supplements you might take currently and what you're expecting of CurraNZ. Either written or video form is fine for the application and the four post event reports. Applications are due by 11pm Sunday 28th August 2022.

Lactic Turkey owners Shaun (Runningbeast) and Madeleine Collins have been using it for a couple of years now with great results in recovery, so we're stoked to have CurraNZ on board.

CurraNZ keeps you running - CurraNZ is an award winning 100% natural sports and health superfood supplement. Perfect for health and fitness, with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and blood flow-promoting properties. Great for recovery, performance and energy, Vegan-friendly CurraNZ supports healthy blood sugar and fat metabolism, cardiovascular function and immunity to help you live life to the full. CurraNZ are so confident you'll feel a difference, they give your money back if you don't experience the recovery benefits.

Final call for participants to register for the Lactic Turkey Events Junior Trail Running Camp in Auckland on 2-4 September based at the brand new Karekare Surfclub.

This camp is aimed at juniors 13-18-ish who are keen on trial running.

The camp will start Friday evening (6pm) and finishes at 11am on Sunday (cause its Dad’s day😀).

This ISN’T a hardcore elite, teach you everything you need to know and push you till you drop type of camp! The actual objective is to kick start your spark for trail running, maybe give you some knowledge on how to make your trail running journey start well.

The other aim is for you meet some cool, like-minded people you might start to hang out with at events or your own training runs.

During the weekend we'll have:
• a couple of lovely trail adventure runs
• talks while on the run and back at camp (including guest speakers) which will cover: nutrition, strength, bush/running first aid, running technique, training and more
• Q&A with some top trail runners
• watch inspirational trail run films

We are limiting it to 15 juniors and a couple of parents for this first year and we’ll see how it goes. To avoid a mass of applications, we’ll also limit it to greater Auckland initially, but if all goes well we’ll have a bigger one next year!

So we're calling for nominations of interested juniors. Email [email protected] with your details, running experience and other sports you do, why you reckon it would be great to come to a trail running camp, your running goals if you have any and what you’d love to learn about or do at the camp. Fitness wise you should be able to run 40-60mins easy pace on trails with hills.

Cost is $85. Accommodation is $70 and then thanks to a generous donation from Dirt Church Radio, the other costs will be no more than $15

We're going to give the lucky 15, free entry into the Bivouac Outdoor Wild Auckland Series of trail run/walk events too, so you can put your new skills to practice.

20/08/2022

And they’re off, on the Long Expedition course of the first event in to 2022 Bivouac Outdoor Wild Auckland, tiny dots climbing the first hill, in order to get the stunning views.

Course details for the first event in the 2022 Bivouac Outdoor Wild Auckland Series of Trail runs/walks are now live on the website. A reminder that we hold off releasing these details until the week of the event so we try and maintain that exploring type feel to the events and people don't pre-run the courses!

It's been a while since we've had a Wild Auckland event, what with all the pesky COVID interruptions so we can't wait to host you at this event! Covid's still trying to stop the Series 🤣 with Lactic Turkey HQ finally succumbing to it, mid last week. Luckily with enough time for us to get well and be out of isolation in time for the weekend! Hence this is a little delayed sorry.

The Tawharanui courses go over marshland, through rolling farmland, native bush, through some rocky coastline and along the beach and through dunes. Courses listed below may even have to change last minute due to Takahe and other precious birds nesting, so expect to see plenty of birdlife – it has been a bit of a juggle developing great courses balanced with staying away from nesting sites 🙂

https://www.lacticturkey.co.nz/wildauckland/information/event-1-tawharanui/

The course details, maps and a bunch of event specific details are all on this page and will be included in the final details email due out tomorrow!
