Q&A time!

One of our lovely students asked -

"I’ve got a lovely friend coming tomorrow to let me practice BIAB and she has a split in her nail. She has no recollection of any trauma to her nail bed and has had SNS or gel to help hold it together a few times before.

It’s reoccurring and she has a ridge down the middle of her nail. I don’t want to do anything to cause more damage or create an environment for infection by layering an unsuitable product over the top. My first instinct is to shorten the nail and wait for it to grow out , but as it’s a reoccurring problem I’m a bit hesitant."

One of our Mentors said -

"Vertical lines indicate damage to the matrix where the nail grows from. So that part of the matrix where that particular line of cells grows is damaged which is why it stays like that"

And then another chimed in -

"I have had good success with a similar client and using BIAB. You just need to be very mindful of not buffing that ridge thin, scrubbing in your base coat and mapping layer. You will likely need to build up the product to meet the ridge in order to get a smooth finish.

These types of nails can be problematic for lifting and moisture getting in. The client needs to practice good aftercare to prevent this eg wearing gloves when cleaning or doing dishes etc cuticle oil regularly and maintenance appointments 😉 You could use a form under the gap at the end also"

Q - Can you fill MMA in with EMA safely?

A - That, my friend, depends on your definition of safe. The short answer, is no.

The informed answer, however -

👉 You will be filling MMA
👉 That means being exposed to MMA dust
👉 MMA dust is the safest form of MMA because it's cured and non volatile
👉 It's also still tiny and airborne
👉 Its also still MMA

And then you'll also have the issue of 2 different brands trying to adhere to each other, never mind that they're already different chemical structures. So you're at risk of one or both yellowing, lifting from each other, becoming brittle, allowing greenies etc etc

Personally? I'd nope on outta that one 😜

Well, the weather decided to hit us with another cold snap here in Canterbury! I'm currently cocooned in my trusty snuggly throw, clutching onto my beloved Monaco Summit cup filled to the brim with liquid energy.

Our last lesson was all about sculpting French Acrylics! Sculpting a French nail isn't for the faint of heart, but these students never fail to impress me with their skills.

As for me, I have to say I'm partial to the reverse method approach over the traditional one. Those sharp smile lines just speak to my soul!

We had a lot of firsts this week in our Tuesday night lesson & a loooot of smiles at the end of the night 😊

We had students doing Acrylic Extensions using forms, Traditional Manicures, Gel Manicures, E-Filing and Builder in a Bottle - it was all on!

Snuggles with my forever work buddy during admin today! One of the best things about working from home is spending my days with this cutie by my side.

People say dogs are like family, and I know it's true because my two-year-old niece asked if my fur baby came out of my tummy! 😂 I guess she thought our bond was just that special.

Can't blame her though—this pup has a permanent place in my heart ❤️🐾

How long are our courses?

The duration of the courses at Monaco Nail Academy can vary depending on the specific module chosen and the pace at which a student progresses. You have 12 months to complete each module from the time you enrol, but the actual duration is entirely up to you.

For the Foundation Certificate in Nail Technology, the course is designed to be flexible and self-guided, allowing students to complete it at their own pace. Generally, students might take anywhere from a few months to a year to complete the course, depending on their individual schedules and commitments.
The Foundation Certificate includes over 130 hours of in-depth pre-recorded video content, 60 hours of live lessons, supporting texts, and then you need to practice.

It sounds like a lot but if you committed 8 hours per day to the course and spent 5 hours of that day watching videos and 3 hours in live lessons, it would take 26 days to complete the content and then an extra day or two to sit Assessments. At one day a week that’s just over 6 months, or if you use up the full 12 month allowance you’ll just need to set aside an average of 4 hours per week.

If you don’t want to do the full Foundation Certificate, you can choose from the 12 individual modules that form the course, creating a Pick n Mix qualification that suits your goals and interests. All Modules blend pre-recorded video demos, written step-by-steps, and optional live lessons, with exams to track your progress. When you view the enrolment page for a Module, you’ll also see the expected duration, and by enrolling in one Module at a time, your workload reduces, with the 12-month time limit applying to each module as you enrol, not to your time at Monaco as a whole.

Things that made me happy this weekend -

😍 I finished an entire book on Saturday and THEN started this one last night, what even.
😍 I cleaned out the pantry. No one is ever allowed to make toast, ever again, because all the labels are facing the right way and must stay like this forever.
😍 Not giving a shizen that my eyebrow is attempting to grow in the opposite direction after sleeping on it funny and posting the picture anyway.

As a Nail Tech, you never know what kind of natural nails will walk through the door! I always start a builder gel lesson by going over different nail structures and how to correct them. Lucky, as my student's model today had a few ski jump nails. By understanding nail structure, my student was able to provide strength and improve the look of her nails without adding bulk 💛

NZ Nail Competition

Everyone meet my demonstration friend... Handrea. She made her debut appearance in my lesson last week and I must say she HANDled it very well 🙄😂😂

Handrea & I demonstrated how to safely use an E-file to enhance our services by thinning product, contouring product & reducing length. It really helped my student get a good HANDle on her e-file techniques so high five for Handrea ✋😂

All of the students showed amazing progress this week I’ve really got to HAND it to them 🤣

Whoops, looks like I got a little too lid-focused during this demo, though! 😄 Despite the lid mix-up, I loved sharing the Monaco Magic that was taught to me and seeing the students excited at the end of the lesson when they see the results of what was taught.

Is there anything more perfect than coming home to the smell of a crock-pot that’s been cooking away all day? Yes. Yes there is. The taste of a crock-pot dinner on a cold, dark wintery night 🤤

Buuuut I digress! Our last lesson was another banger with a first ever pedicure, an acrylic backfill, a Dip Powder French manicure & a STUNning assessment pass 🙌 👏

I had a really inspirational conversation with a client last week, I was telling her how I’m so surprised that I’m busier at this time of year than I was last Christmas.

My reasoning was like how weird, in my previous experience in the industry summer has always been busier than winter because a lot more people tend to treat themselves in summer!

But she made a really fair point and said ‘I don’t think it’s the time of year, I think you’ve found your ideal clientele who rebook every 3ish weeks instead of getting nails as a one off, and now the work speaks for itself and you don’t have to worry about filling the gaps, you’re regulars do this for you’

She made such a valid point! Not only is this a pat on the back for finding my ideal clientele but also makes me feel at ease knowing I have secure bookings going forward 💓

This conversation left me feeling inspired and I felt like my cup was full 🥰

Another lesson done and dusted! This week it was amazing to see another student conquering her BIAB assessment. Despite facing a challenging situation with her model having broken nails, she decided not to back down and gave it her best shot. Her determination paid off as she excelled in the rest of the assessment, earning her a pass!
