Headaches can turn your day upside down, but they don't have to be your norm.

Plus, if you've had a concussion, we can assist with your ACC claim.

Don't let ni**les knock out your next personal best. Our osteopaths can see the bigger picture – because your knee pain might just be the hip's cry for help.
Players who experienced physical complaints or “ni**les”, that had minor or moderate impact on participation or performance were 3 – 6 times more likely to suffer an injury resulting in missed games or training in the following 7 days. 68% of all time-loss injuries (ie injuries that meant time out of the game) were preceded by ni**les, with 94% of knee & 90% of hamstring injuries preceded by a ni**le.
The weekly risk of injury for a fully fit player was 6%, while for those players who reported a ni**le, rose to 22%.
We're all about keeping you in action and injury-free, with a tailored approach that understands your sport and your goals. Whether it's a knee, ankle, or hip, our treatment approach has all your bases covered. And, if an injury does hit you, we've got your back with ACC claims and a solid game plan for recovery.
We're on your team for a holistic approach that keeps you moving, improving, and excelling in your sport. Find an osteopathy new zealand member today at www.osteopathsnz.co.nz

With updated international and ACC concussion guidelines, there is a groundswell of concern for how concussion is managed within sporting organisations and the potential for long-term harm if best practices are not adhered to.
The benefits of participating in sports are well known, and yet, many are seeing the numbers of those participating in sports declining, in part, due to the alarming headlines we are seeing about the consequences of concussion injuries in high-profile athletes.
Baseline testing is considered the gold standard in concussion management by assessing what is ‘normal’ for an athlete before the sporting season starts. This webinar will focus on baseline testing and HeadWise’s wrap-around approach to concussion care and recovery.
We are limited in mitigating the risk of suffering a concussion, but pre-empting and providing the appropriate care when a concussion occurs is well within our control. Having a baseline test as a comparison increases the accuracy of diagnosis and best informs the care needed for recovery and return to play decisions.
A thorough, consistent and rigid return to sport and return to learn/work protocols, combined with a best-practice concussion policy, we can confidently encourage athletes to get involved in all sporting codes, safe in the knowledge that the best possible concussion care has been implemented.
The main points that will be covered in this webinar are:
• Basics of concussion
• Updated ACC policy
• Current sport policies
• Baseline testing
• Importance of timely, appropriate and wrap around care
• Utilising digital care in the age of technology

Hi all, a message from Ara below, asking for some help in shaping some of the cultural aspects of the curricluim below, please reach out to Catherine if you think you can be of help;
Kia ora, I hope the year has started well for you, your whanau, and your practices. Our osteopathy team is just getting underway with our 5-yearly NZQA review and our team is hoping to develop truly culturally intelligent osteopathic programmes. We’re hoping to find practicing osteopaths with lived experience of OCNZ competencies 1.1 and 1.2 who will be able to provide us with insight into Māori and Pacific world views as they relate to our osteopathy curriculum development, particularly in terms of bio-science, professional practice, and socio-cultural knowledge.
As a starting point, we would like to have your input on using the concept of cultural safety to scaffold the curriculum around. I have an article underpinning our thoughts for you to read, if you would like to (please contact Catherine directly for a copy of that)
Do you have any capacity to help us here? We’re planning on having a couple of 2-hour workshops over the next few months to gather feedback and insight and we’d love your input here. Also, if you know of anyone else who might be able to provide the kinds of insight we’re looking for, please feel free to invite them 😊
If you’re interested in being included in our development, please contact [email protected], and I can let you know more about what the discussions / workshops might involve.
Ngā mihi,
Catherine
Hi . The ONZ team met on Friday 01 March and covered a range of planning on topics. I have taken up the role of communications and will be sharing information about what we're all upto over the coming weeks, so as not to drown you in information!
Website
Since the last committee in 2020 the website has been an ongoing issue. Last year our new board came with expertise that discovered that our ONZ website is a key resource and the content and layout requires improvement. In December 2023, we've actively been involved in redesigning our website to better cater to both you as Osteopath’s and to attract the public seeking assistance and understanding around osteopathy. This website will also align well compared with other international osteopathic associations.
What this will mean for you.
The existing website will become a dynamic platform to be our one key resource that we can use to effectively promote osteopathy to the general public & other allied health professionals.
This will include:
- Updated content that explains osteopathy to the public in a much more interactive way. Articles, what we are doing in the community, sports and general public stories of how osteopathy has been beneficial, highlighting special interest groups
- Updating the current search function. This has been the major delay and over the years, it has been not fit for purpose for bigger areas such as Auckland, which was due to the restriction to our membership database. We now have a more specific search function being added by the developers, making it incredibly easy for the public and allied health professionals to search members only, and near them. Just like google search, but will only bring up ONZ members.
- Accessing your membership portal will not change.
This project has taken a while as we had very specific goals for the website and finding the right mix of design and functionality has been a slow process. It is also a project we wanted to future proof so no more changes are required. We are now approaching the final stages of the design process. With a solid foundation for the public to interact with we can push one of the core values of ONZ more heavily; education & awareness for the public about all the great things an Osteopath can do for them!
Next post will be about April’s Osteopathic International Awareness Week and how ONZ are going to approach it this year.
