For nearly 30 years, Tahiti has reserved its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) exclusively for the Polynesian fishing fleet and banned any fishing methods other than line fishing. In 2002, a marine mammal sanctuary was established to protect whales and dolphins in these pristine waters β including strict rules around interactions with these species.
