City crows may have high cholesterol because they eat fast food 24/09/2019

Did you know humans aren't the only ones that can suffer from high cholesterol?

Crows living in urban areas have been found to have higher blood cholesterol levels than their rural counterparts. That may be due to humans feeding them, and the fast food we leave behind.

These findings are consistent with a handful of other studies which show higher cholesterol levels in animals that live in near humans, including foxes, sparrows and even sea turtles living near more densely populated Canary Islands. However it is unclear what effect high cholesterol has on these animals.

Are you eating enough greens?

A new study shows leafy greens contain an unusual sugar molecule which feeds good gut bacteria and limits the ability of bad bacteria to colonise the gut by shutting them out of the prime 'real estate'.

Sweet discovery in leafy greens holds key to gut health A critical discovery about how bacteria feed on an unusual sugar molecule found in leafy green vegetables could hold the key to explaining how 'good' bacteria protect our gut and promote health.

Resistant starch from potatoes are a great source of food for your gut microbiota.

Instead of being broken down by our body’s digestive enzymes, resistant starches are broken down by bacteria in the gut leading to the production of chemicals, such as butyrate, which are known to be good for our health.

How resistant starch from potatoes affects the gut microbiota Despite their popularity, potatoes have a reputation for being an unhealthy food that is high in starchy carbohydrates. Work from the lab of Dr. Thomas Schmidt of the University of Michigan, however, offers some redemption for the humble potato. While potatoes are high in easily digestible starch th...

Microbes and the Mind 26/08/2019

"You are not a singleton. No matter how well you think you know yourself – you are only skimming the surface.

Your human genes represent only 1 percent of your total genome. You are, genetically speaking, almost entirely microbial. And, since genes produce all the useful proteins and enzymes that run the show, your cravings, your moods, even your personality, can be affected by those tiny creatures. You are plural."

How your gut bacteria influences your behaviour, emotions and thinking | CBC Radio 19/08/2019

Although we're familiar with the idea that our stomaches can affect our brain, this goes far beyond the idea of getting 'hangry'.

Our gut microbiome — or more specifically all those little bacteria that live in it — can affect the way our brains work in many ways. More and more research is pointing to the idea that bacteria in your gut can influence your mood and how you think. John Cryan says "There is no limit really on what aspects of emotion could be modulated by the microbiome"

How your gut bacteria influences your behaviour, emotions and thinking | CBC Radio Our gut bacteria can profoundly affect the way our brains work. Scientific research in recent years is starting to hint that our gut bacteria, known as our microbiome, is an active participant in our emotions, how we think and even how we behave.

Statins don't work well for one in two people - study 22/07/2019

Increasingly there is evidence that **statins may not work for almost half of people**.
Although this a bold claim the findings can be due to a multitude of other factors such as diet and lifestyle contributions, or even people not taking medication regularly.

Overall statins should not be seen as a one-pill solution. There is much more that people can do to look after their heart health in conjunction with statins such as eating a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables, getting atleast 30 minutes exercise 3 times per week, and looking after their gut health with the use of probiotics which has been shown to decrease bad cholesterol, and increase good cholesterol levels.

Discussion with Rob Knight on the World Microbiome Day 2019 17/07/2019

Kiwi born scientist and founding Director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation in the US Rob Knight discusses how lifestyle and diet affect the diversity of the human gut microbiome.

Did you know, the number of plant types in a person’s diet has the strongest effect on the diversity of his or her gut microbiome? “The difference between people who eat just a few types of plants per week versus those who eat over 30 types was a stronger effect than recent antibiotic use,” says Rob Knight.

Have you seen the new blog section on our website? Designed to keep you in the know with the latest developments in microbiota and cholesterol research.

This article looks at the composition of the human gut microbiome and the effect of dietary proteins and saturated fats. Results indicated greater diversity in the gut microbiome meant greater stability in the face of dietary change.

Personal microbiome fingerprint outweighs dietary protein and saturated fat in human gut microbiome composition Although twin studies have shown that the gut microbiota includes a heritable component, environmental factors relating to diet, drugs and demographic and anthropometric traits are all major determinants of gut microbial diversity. However, the influence of specific nutrient groups on the human gut....

Geography, Ethnicity or Subsistence-Specific Variations in Human Microbiome Composition and Diversity 04/07/2019

We share our body space with around 100 trillion microorganisms, collectively known as microbiota. Large-scale endeavors such as the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) have been created to discover what a healthy human microbiome looks like, to understand how it links to disease, and how it varies with host lifestyle, genetics, age, nutrition, medication, and environment.

Only recently, some national and international initiatives have initiated to look at the human microbiome in diverse ethnic populations and there is a fast growing collection of data describing the microbiome structures in various non-US or non-Western populations. Read the article to find out more.

Geography, Ethnicity or Subsistence-Specific Variations in Human Microbiome Composition and Diversity One of the fundamental issues in the microbiome research is characterization of the healthy human microbiota. Recent studies have elucidated substantial divergences in the microbiome structure between healthy individuals from different race and ethnicity. This review provides a comprehensive account...

Although the terms lipids and cholesterol are often used interchangeably, they are different. Lipids are fat-like molecules which circulate in your bloodstream but can also be found in cells and tissue throughout your body. They are required for the basic functions of our body, including energy and hormone production, bile acid formation and building new cells.

There are several different types of lipids. Cholesterol is the best known which is why it is often thought that they are the same thing, but Cholesterol is actually part lipid, part protein.

ABOUT US

We believe in the understanding of the "microbiome" (also called “human biota” or “gut flora”), and the use of the term “probiota” with pharmacologically positive action on the human. Hence our name 'Pharmabiota'.

This knowledge will see the future use of specific bacterial and/or yeast strains, along with selectively mixed groups of probiotics and prebiotics, utilised as clinical tools in the encouragement of good health, “well-being”, the prevention of illness and, where possible, to be clinically positive in the treatment of illnesses.

In recent years, science has focused not only on pathogenic bacteria but also, more importantly, on the complex community of microorganisms which are present within the Human body and referred to as “microbiota”.

We believe that the relationship between Humans and the “microbiota” of the gut to be symbiotic although current description is that the relationship is mutual. The term “gut microbiome” refers specifically to the “genome” of the gut microbiota. By common usage “microbiome” and “microbiota” are often regarded now as synonyms.
