The Gore District Council has apologised to the community and each other for the turmoil in recent days. A week ago, deputy mayor Keith Hovell called on the Mayor Ben Bell to resign. That sparked a requisition for an extraordinary meeting where the council would vote on a motion of no confidence in Mr Bell and strip him of his committee assignments. Today, councillors took a conciliatory tone with each other and no one was willing to support either motion. Instead, they sought support from Local Government New Zealand for a review to restore confidence in the council.

State Highway 2 between Napier and Wairoa officially opened to traffic at 7am on Sunday, more than three months after it was damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle. RNZ reporter Kate Green drove up from Napier to Wairoa via the newly repaired highway and got to take a look at the wreckage fo the former Waikare River bridge.

Wayne Brown on libraries
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown took aim at libraries when pressed about cutting funding for community services in the council budget. Brown said he's questioning everything while the budget is being put together, and libraries could perhaps be open for shorter hours or make better use of volunteers.

#WATCH Vets are feeling the pressure as a shortage of staff is causing trouble across the industry, and it heavily impacting staff in the emergency and shelter sector. A vet at a busy Auckland emergency clinic told RNZ how it affects them.

Isolated Wairoa resident shares flood story
Wairoa has been off-grid since Tuesday, with very little information getting in, or out. It's short on fuel and water. Electricity is patchy. Locals have spent days salvaging their belongings and digging mud from their homes. RNZ's Kate Green and Nathan McKinnon flew in.
