LARSON’S PHARMACY CAN NOW OFFER A VACCINE TO PROTECT AGAINST SHINGLES!

What is Shingles?

Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. Following chickenpox infection, the virus lies dormant in the nerves near the spine and may re-emerge many years later as shingles. Shingles most commonly affects older adults or people of any age with a weakened immune system. Shingles is characterised by a painful rash, usually in one area of the body. The first sign of shingles is often a burning, sharp pain, tingling or numbness under the skin on one side of your body, especially back, abdomen or face, followed by onset of pain and a rash of small blisters appear on a reddened area of skin.

LARSON’S PHARMACY CAN NOW OFFER A VACCINE TO PROTECT AGAINST MEASLES, MUMPS AND RUBELLA!

What is Measles, Mumps and Rubella?

Measles virus is highly contagious. It is spread through the air by infected droplets or by direct contact with secretions from the nose or throat of infected persons, for example by touching contaminated items or surfaces. Symptoms can include a fever, cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis and a red, blotchy rash that spreads over the body. Complications from measles can include ear infections, diarrhoea, pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death.
Anyone who has not received at least one dose of a measles-containing vaccine or who has not already had the disease is at risk of catching measles.
Mumps is a viral illness which can cause swelling and tenderness of salivary glands. Symptoms may also include fever, headache, malaise, and poor appetite. It is possible to get mumps more than once, but most people only get it once in their lifetime. It is usually seen in young children but can affect people of any age.
Rubella is most common in children and is usually mild, however if a pregnant woman gets rubella, it can cause serious birth defects in the baby.
