KING COUNTRY TEAMS SET TO PLAY IN TAUMARUNUI
A smorgasbord of rugby union is set to descend on Taumarunui in the coming weeks, as the TLC King Country Rams' Heartland Championship season edges closer.
The Rams and Big Horns rock into town this Saturday for their final pre-season hit-out, the Big Horns playing the curtain-raiser against the Waikato Divisional XV from 12.30pm, followed by the Rams, who face Hamilton Sub-Union from 2.30pm at the Taumarunui Domain.
It will serve as an entree for Taumarunui locals, who will get the full course when the Rams face Mid Canterbury in round one of the Heartland Championship match on August 17, also to be played at the domain.
The King Country U14 boys, hot off their annual Heartland Development Camp in Taupo, will play New Plymouth Boys' High School in the curtain-raiser from 12.30pm on the August 17 gameday.
King Country Rugby Union rugby manager Josh Standen hoped the locals would come out in force to support the King Country teams on show in the coming weeks.
"We've got some cracking games coming up in Taumarunui and the locals love their footy, and I'm sure we'll see a heap of them come down to support," Standen said.
"Taumarunui is getting a reputation for being a successful stomping ground for our rep teams, and a large part of that is the support our teams get when they play there."
The round one clash should be a beauty, with Mid Canterbury finishing ninth in the Heartland Championship last year, equal points with and one place ahead of the Rams.
The last time the two teams met, the Rams pinched a valuable 34-22 win on the road in Ashburton on the way to only their second top-four Meads Cup finish since the Heartland Championship started in 2006.
