Today is World Ocean Acidification Day. 🌊

About 30 percent of the C02 released into the atmosphere is absorbed by the world’s oceans. As the oceans absorb increasing C02 from the atmosphere, the water becomes more acidic – this process is known as ocean acidification. 🧪

Ocean acidification can be detrimental to sea creatures with carbonate-based shells and skeletons such as crustaceans, shellfish, coral and more. This sea life is a critical part of the food web, meaning ocean acidification threatens the delicate balance of life in our oceans. 🐚

Aotearoa New Zealand is home to the Munida time-series transect; a long-running record of ocean pH measurements taken along a 65km line off the Otago coast. Established in 1998, it’s the only time series of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Six times a year for the last 23 years, NIWA marine chemist, Dr Kim Currie has taken the same boat trip from Dunedin to collect ocean chemistry data to add to the time series. Her careful data collection has been vital for teasing out the trend that shows the open ocean is becoming more acidic as it absorbs more atmospheric carbon dioxide. 📈

Huge congratulations to NIWA marine chemist Dr Kim Currie who has won the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society Award! 🎉🙌

Kim was recognised for her incredible work on ocean acidification and leading the Munida Time Series – a record of ocean pH measurements taken off the Otago coast since 1998 and the only time series of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. 🌊

Six times a year, for the last 24 years, Kim has taken the same boat trip from Dunedin to collect ocean chemistry data to add to the time series. Her careful data collection has been vital for teasing out the trend that shows the open ocean is becoming more acidic as it absorbs more carbon dioxide. 📈

As well as being internationally recognised for her research, Kim is also a fantastic mentor for students and has worked hard to make the trips available to all that want to come, supporting a huge amount of post graduate science to take place that would have been more difficult otherwise.

Fantastic work Kim and a well-deserved win! 👏

25/11/2022

Congratulations to Dr Kim Currie from NIWA for being awarded the NZMSS award. Kim is internationally recognised for her work on ocean acidification. She started the Munida time series during her PhD and has continued (stubbornly) to do monthly voyages to monitor the carbon chemistry of the waters offshore Dunedin across the subtropical front out to the sun-Antarctic waters offshore. This is the longest running OA time series in the southern hemisphere and part of the NZOA-ON network and the global GOA-ON.

Many students and researchers have piggybacked on the voyages for the Munida time series- so it has provided an important platform for many marine scientists to collect their own data.

Kim is an advocate for FAIR data and making sure it’s all open access. she has sat on many international committees representing and showcasing NZ marine science on the global stage.

She is also a wonderful role model and mentor! A well deserved award. Congratulations Kim.

The Hamilton Award encourages scientific research in New Zealand by early career researchers. Our recipient Dr Chris Cornwall, Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, was celebrated for his work on the impacts of climate change on coral reef growth globally.
