Kahurangi Rangers
Fun, friends, and challenges for girls aged 12 1/2 to 17 years - part of Girl Guiding NZ
Tonight we had a Matariki themed linking for our newest Ranger - her outfit is made up of an item representing each star from the Matariki cluster. We also played some outdoor games and finished off some interest certificates!
Tonight we celebrated World Environment Day 🌎♻️🌿 by learning about recycling, making artworks out of recyclable items, and watching live cams from around the world
Tonight at Rangers we abandoned our planned scavenger hunt due to the rain and instead celebrated road safety week by setting up some roads in the hall and "driving" around in groups following the road code and coping with hazards. So much unexpected fun we forgot to take photos and almost forgot supper!
Finished the camp by rescuing woozle and nancy after they were kidnapped by the 'pirates' and finally finding the treasure!
A fun filled day at camp - beautiful weather but a bit chilly tonight!
Tonight we celebrated Mother's Day, International Day of the Family, and Pink Shirt Day! We invited our Mum's and other family members along to join in a pink themed night full of Ranger chaos. Highlights included a 5.2 metre tall spaghetti and marshmallow tower (there may have been some exploitation of loop holes in the rules...) and some incredible pink trash to fashion outfits.
Finished off term 1 with a games and icecream night, including enrolling our 3 newest Rangers
Another night full of food - M&M cookies, pesto & vegetable pasta, mango taste test, banana bread houses/swimming pools, fried satay noodles, different types of dip, and pavlova. Plus we managed to fit in some discussions about commercial kitchen safety rules and kiwiana art!
Lots of food activities at Ranger tonight - amongst the four groups we had kiwi snacks, biscuit houses, veges and hummus, a range of sweet sauces, and a lot of cookies (including some interesting additions)!
For International Women's Day we reflected on our own experiences of being excluded or treated differently based on gender. Here are our messages for women in our lives and around the world.
Tonight we had two groups of Rangers organise activities to celebrate NZ Sea Week and International Women's Day. Highlights of the night were decorating ocean themed cupcakes, anonymous sharing box for things we can say and do to support and encourage women in our lives, and making friendship bracelets for another Ranger to show they are appreciated and valued.
A busy night working on the Chef 101 and Kiwiana interest certificates - everything from 'deconstructed bacon and egg pie' (because they forgot to bring a pie tin), failed attempts at fried eggs due to no oil, smiley face toast, creating gingerbread tents when the houses wouldn't stand up, and designing a giant milkshake cup as an large object to represent Auckland. And we still had enough time for some Thinking Day activities too!
Started Rangers for the year with a classic game of flip/fold the tarp while still standing on it - only some groups got big tarps and others tiny ones!
Finished off our last night of the year with a water fight and secret santa
Tonight we presented four Rangers with their Queens Guide Award - making a total of seven completing the award in 2023! We celebrated the girls by creating musical dramas of some of their favourite memories before parents and guide leaders joined us for the badge presentation and supper.
Tonight we came to Rangers in our pyjamas, built a giant blanket fort, and held a talent show!
Headed out and about on the bus tonight to explore some local food options and see what we could buy for $20 per group - our unit almost managed to fill a whole bus!
Tonight's adventures included trying out some geocaching and creating our own geocache critters
Our Pathway progression group (plus a couple of our older Rangers who just wanted to be outside after a day of studying) spent the night pitching and striking lightweight tents, building tarpaulin shelters, and cooking smores and hot chocolate on lightweight cookers
Our explorer interest certificate group had an outdoor cooking masterchef challenge - they had to create a main and dessert with the random ingredients that might be left in their packs at the end of a tramp. The winning main was a tomato based curry with instant mashed potato. The winning dessert was stewed apple with cinnamon and raisins, boysenberry sauce, topped with toasted coconut. And the most unusual (but surprisingly edible) dish was the toasted buns with gravy, sweet chilli tuna, and pringle crumbs!
Tonight our law and order group held a mock court trial for the crime of speaking over the Ranger leader when her hand was raised. The final verdict was 'not guilty'
Our Pathway Badge group learnt about outdoor clothing, packing a pack, and map reading tonight
Finishing up A's animal welfare exploration with a visit to Ambury Farm
Fun times at A's animal welfare exploration
Tonight we finished off term 3 with a fun night of laser tag, arcade games, and icecream!
Tonight we presented three Queens Guide Awards and linked our newest Ranger! Congratulations girls! And thanks to the Guides, Guide leaders, and parents who came along to celebrate with us!
Tonight we had a quiz and icecream night, but the highlight was the few rounds of 'just dance' to finish off the night
Tonight our Growing the Future interest certificate group learned about rongoā rākau and made our own manuka lotion, planted microgreen seeds to grow at home, and tried some microgreens as part of our supper
Our Be Seen Guiding group also had a busy night cleaning up the local parks and streets
Tonight our Growing the Future group designed and made models of community spaces, and took part in a sensory taste trial... Made for lots of fun and some interesting facial expressions
