For our community in Invercargill, we announce the continuity of primary care in Invercargill following the closure of the Invercargill Urgent Doctors today.

We are working with Te Hau o Te Ora, through our partnership with Hokonui Rūnanga and Awarua Rūnaka, to provide an after-hours primary care service, until further notice. This is at Te Hau o Te Ora general practice on Clyde Street in Invercargill.

The service will see patients from 6-9pm Monday to Friday and from 12-4pm on weekends – Saturday and Sunday – and public holidays including Southland anniversary next week. People should call 0800 456 138 to make a booking.

For those still ringing IUDS, they will be redirected.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) directly affects 4 out of 5 adults. While most of us never experience symptoms, for some people the virus can cause cancer and claims almost half a million lives globally every year.

The first line of defence is prevention by safe, effective and proven HPV immunisation which is free for all people aged 9 -26:

➡️ Go to https://info.health.nz/immunisations/vaccines-aotearoa/hpv-human-papillomavirus-vaccine/ for more information about the vaccine and how to get immunised.

Vaccines have proven to be 90% effective in protecting against infection from the types of HPV that cause most cervical, a**l and ge***al cancers, as well as some mouth and throat cancers.

➡️ To find out more, talk to your doctor, practice nurse or health clinic, or call the free helpline 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863).

The second line of defence is getting regular cervical screening. The purpose of cervical screening is to detect HPV-related pre-cancerous cell changes, making effective treatment possible to prevent cancer.

There are now 2 options for cervical screening. HPV testing is a better first screening test. It looks for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer.

This gives you options for how you have your HPV screening sample taken:

✅ a vaginal swab — you can either self-test, or a health professional can help
✅ a cervical sample (previously known as a smear test) — taken by a health professional.

Both options are just as good for finding HPV infections.

➡️ You can find out more about screening, and how to get a test here: www.TimeToCervicalScreen.nz

➡️ Head to the Southern Health website to find out more about local cervical screening events: https://www.southernhealth.nz/getting-help-you-need/health-checks-and-screening/cervical-screening
