Today is World Heart Day 🌏❤🩺
We would love to share some heart facts because raising awareness about congenital and acquired childhood heart disease is really important to the Heart Kids team and our heart whānau.
❤ Every week, 12 babies are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) in Aotearoa NZ
❤ Other previously healthy children can find themselves living with an acquired heart condition as a result of a childhood illness such as Rheumatic Fever or Kawasaki Disease
❤ A CHD is the most common serious birth abnormality in Aotearoa NZ
❤ Rheumatic heart disease is the result of rheumatic fever caused by streptococcal bacteria
❤ 80% to 90% of Kawasaki disease cases occur in children under age 5 and older than 6 months
❤ There is neither prevention nor cure for a CHD
❤ Every year in Aotearoa, over 600 major heart surgeries are performed on children or babies - sometimes in their first few hours of life
💔 CHD is the number 1 cause of death for infants and newborns in Aotearoa NZ
💔 Annually over 50 heart kids will lose their battle and become heart angels
Living with a heart child can place a huge amount of stress on families, daily life can be overwhelming, scary and isolating, and heart children will often face challenges for their entire lives.
This is why our Heart Kids mission is to provide lifelong support to all affected by a childhood heart condition.
