Our team pulled out all the tricks while packing your treats this week 👻🫛

What do you think Wonkers? Should we do something about it? 👀♻️
Straight from the Bay of Plenty and Northland to your Boxes, so far this season you’ve helped rescue over 50 THOUSAND KILOS of the iconic toast topper, the dip to your chip - the AVOCADO. And we’re not stopping anytime soon! 🥑💚
These little guac-stars ⭐have been rejected from export for being “too small”, or for having marks or ridges on their skin. You’ll likely spot a surplus of small avos this season, due to lack of rain fall throughout the year meaning the young fruit didn’t get the water they needed to spark their growth spurt - despite the growers trying to recreate this with top notch irrigation.
Our avocados reach you on the firmer side, so that they can ripen to perfection in your fruit bowl. Store them beside bananas or apples to speed this up ⏱️Once they’ve softened to your liking, keep them in the fridge until you’re ready to enjoy.
It a’pears’ we’ve had some “too small” crops sprout in this weeks’ Upper North Island Boxes 😉🍐
These petite pears were rejected from supermarket shelves at the last minute, leaving 2 TONNES of tasty yet tiny fruit with nowhere to go. Luckily the grower gave us a buzz, and we sent a truck to the rescue since we knew you Wonkers would love them in lunchboxes or with your breakfast oats or cereal. While they’re small in size, the flavour is big - lovely sweet and juicy! Trust us...we’ve taste tested 🤗
They’re even smaller than one of our other rescue favourites - “too marked” Tauranga avocados. Their skins may be imperfect, but a piece of toast won’t know the difference! 🍞💚
Thanks for making these rescues possible! 🫶
A couple rescue stories we hope you’ll love 🫶 this week, Wonkers!
🚀3,500kgs of “too small” beetroot rescued from the fields of Canterbury. With the season drawing to a close, the plants are getting a bit tired 💤 so they are yielding smaller beets that the supermarkets won’t take. We think this size is perfect for roasting and salads.
🚀 The fields are overflowing with greens this time of year thanks to milder temperatures. You’ve helped us save around 800kgs of surplus leaves - a mix of silver beet and baby spinach that was left looking for a home🏡

🍊👀 Meet the Ugli-est find in Wonky this Week
No, we're not shaming these lumpy, bumpy odd balls - 'Ugli Fruit' is the given name for this curious-looking citrus variety, which is a cross between an orange, grapefruit and tangerine.
Ours hail from Gisborne, where our grower is just entering the Ugli Fruit game and had some trial crop ready for a rescue 🚀
With all of our favourite citrus combined into one...these juicy, tangy fruits are any Vit C lovers dream 🧡🍊 Let us know what you think 👇👇
Roasted Fennel & Potatoes on Ricotta - very demure, very mindful ✨✨
All you need:
Fennel
2-3 par cooked potatoes depending their size
1 punnet of Ricotta (250g)
Parmesan
Juice of 1 lemon
Zest of 1/2 a lemon
1 clove of garlic
Olive oil
Salt & pepper
Preheat the oven to 180C and cut fennel bulb into 1/8s making sure to keep the fronds for a garnish. Place on roasting tray with par cooked potatoes and season with olive oil, salt & pepper. Roast for 40 mins until caramalised. In a bowl combine ricotta, lemon juice and zest, minced or grated garlic clove, 1 tbsp olive oil, salt & pepper. Once fennel and potatoes are done, spread the ricotta mix onto a plate and scatter roasted veges on top. Finish with grated Parmesan and fennel fronds 🌱
Logan’s viral cucumber salad but made with Asian Greens 🌱🌱
All you need:
Kailan or Pak Choy
1 tsp rice wine vinegar
1 tsp sesame oil
1 finely grated garlic clove
1 tsp chilli oil
1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
Chop and wash your Asian greens before steaming. Make sure to start with the stems before adding the rest of the leafy green part to ensure an even steam. Pak choy should take around couple mins vs Kailan that needs 3-4 mins. Once cooked quickly plunge into a bowl of iced water to keep their texture and vibrant green. Drain well and place into a container or jar before adding the rest of the ingredients. Pop lid on and give it a shake before enjoying 🥢
This could be your chance to try something NEW in the kitchen wonkers! 🧑🍳 If you’re in the Upper North Island or South Island prepare to get sweet on swedes from Ohakune (or you may know them as ‘rutabagas’ if you hail from the Northern hemisphere)!
Our tips on to use these humble root veggies for cosy winter dishes:
🥔 Much like the lovable spud you can mash ‘em, roast ‘em, or even turn them into chips!
🍲 Peel and chop them then add them into soups or stews until they’re nice & tender and soak up all the flavours.
What will you do with yours?
