Cement-Based Grout
A steadfast standard for locking tiles into place, cement-based grouts hold a long track-record of use,
with recent additions of high-performance types now available. Cement grouts are made up of a
mixture sand and water and are also offered in un-sanded varieties. Un-sanded cement grouts are
recommended for interior applications with joints measuring less than ⅛ of an inch. It is mixed with
water, and the application is very fast and so is the cleaning with water.” Sanded grouts, on the other
hand, are used for joints that measure more than ⅛ of an inch.
Advantages of cement grouts include affordability, and an ease of application.
Disadvantages of cement grout include its propensity to soak up stains and spills over time, since it is
very porous by nature. It is also subject to deterioration caused by harsh chemical cleaners
particularly in wet areas or in commercially cleaned areas.

Epoxy-Based Grout
Establishing new standards for durability and stain-resistance, epoxy-based grouts are well suited for
wet areas, and high-traffic areas in which cement might fall short. Made from two-part epoxy
resins mixed with filler powder, epoxy grout is revered for its near-perfect imperviousness to stains.
Its other advantages include it being 99.3% waterproof, having better strength due to its extremely
hard and durable form, and a high chemical resistance. “Epoxy grout is perfect for floors, especially
commercial floors, damp areas like showers or steam showers, facades, or swimming pools,” says
grout manufacturer Mapei. “This is a two-part material that once mixed harden into an impervious
plastic. It is totally waterproof and stain-proof and keeps the same colour over the time.”
Jim Whitfield, manager of Technical Services at Mapei told industry professionals, “Because epoxy
grout is so tough, it wears extremely well. It doesn’t wear down over time and become a tile gutter -
like cement grout can - where all the dirt and liquid and junk collects.”
While many traditional tilers do not like to specify epoxy grout due to it being more time consuming to
install, GroutPro is a specialist in its use, often insisting that it be used over cement-based grout in
many applications. GroutPro regularly replaces cement based grout with epoxy grout when the
current product has reached the end of its useable life.
In commercial applications, particularly where daily auto-scrubbing machines are employed, epoxy
grout is the only real long-term solution, and should last many years.

Grout plays a fundamental role in tile installations. Though it often goes unnoticed, grout is hard at
work between the tiles, bonding them together, catering for thermal expansion and contraction of the
surface, and fighting off water damage and stains, while imparting a finished look for floors, walls,
and countertops. Traditional cement-based grouts have been used for centuries, however recent
innovations have seen epoxy grout take over as the best solution for many applications. The
information below compares the characteristics of grout’s two essential types.
