One of two major service items for an Energica is changing 140ml of Dexron III every 30,000 km. Took about 15 minutes earlier today, reassuring to see very little swarf stuck to the drain plug magnet.

The other major service item comes up in another 10,000 km - changing 1.2L of coolant every 40,000 km. That'll take a little longer.

Single speed clutchless direct belt drive electric motor requires no maintenance. Range depends on several factors - riding style, traffic speeds, altitude changes, rider weight, and ambient temperature - but likely somewhere around 60 km highway and 120 km city.

How is road tripping New Zealand on an electric motorcycle? The weather was pretty good before Xmas so with minimal planning put into only the first couple of nights I went for a week long 3,169 km jaunt the length of the North Island to find out.

What I found was awesome scenery and great roads (well, most of them). What I didn't find was any range anxiety.

Charging infrastructure is improving all the time and at an ever increasing pace. With over 250 fast charging locations around NZ (many of which have multiple chargers) there's nowhere out of reach on an emoto.

Summer is here! Are you ready to road trip?

Spent the morning riding a loop over Remutaka Hill, round Lake Wairarapa and up to Gladstone and back with a group. A good test with all the touring gear attached (windscreen, tank bag, panniers) before a 1000km ride next weekend to Cape Reinga. 305km all up today so had to stop in Featherstone on the way back for a charge (26 minutes, $6.17). Even with public charger prices the whole trip cost ~$12 in fuel.

Emoto are very cheap to run. Even the most expensive public charger electrons still work out under half the cost of petrol per km, and if you have solar at home fuel is free! Emoto are also extremely reliable, requiring almost no servicing.

There are pros and cons with every bike.

Emoto have a couple of cons: they take half an hour or so to fill up, and they don't make much (if any) noise.

There are more pros than cons though: way (way!) lower running costs, extreme reliability, insane performance, simplicity of operation, ride immersion, and they don't make much (if any) noise.
