Happy Matariki, everyone. A small contribution from me toward The Asian Aotearoan Project in this discussion of maramataka.

https://www.facebook.com/asianaotearoanproject/posts/pfbid0eW5jTfCz8eM5pgQvawcshTJbVHC7ic8qzxrYiFxMWnqBCNwxcN1uSagCSjkaGe5sl?__cft__[0]=AZX6hNrKtglL7k8jxznAUYrtixdS8TyggyQ3uUB_DclGv49ugJdLpzRtA_2cibvghLSsv0Vbym-F-TbA0Cf-xtag2RtqQhDIFtnYnamY9CA0ztE_hFJyLbHIiPhMi--wBYcxTB87K7Eczh4JaI4RsyRvpn-8Gq1-sFVSVcknamicm9W90KQO0RleFQskGNhxc_HoERHJL6gOJFJnj0HULIO4&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R

Living in a Western-dominant culture may cause some to think that Matariki or Chinese New Year or the maramataka are exotic or arbitrary bits of culture that have no relevance to practicalities, and that we’re just celebrating for no reason but to seem cultured.

But actually, very often, culture comes from what works practically for people in their specific environment. That includes Māori and Asian timekeeping. Many cultures used the moon for time keeping, as it was a visible and practical marker to use.

🗓️ Here is just an example of the similarities between the Maramataka and Chinese Calendar (which was the basis for many other East Asian calendar systems).

There are so many other cool things about these systems, like leap months! Comment MOON if you want us to DM you some interesting sites, including checking what moon phase it is today on the maramataka.

Thank you to Jack Yan, whose insights & original blog post on his Chinese calendar and Maramataka conversion table supported this post!

Mānawatia a Matariki!

I know of some very nice office space in the CBD currently occupied by one person and could do with one more. It’s classy and roomy with more than enough for two (it used to house three). Reasonable rates, ideal for a freelancer or contractor. Please let me know if you’re interested, and I can put you in touch.

The quickest way to reach me is via email, please: [email protected] (obviously replace the first part with the correct info!).

Are folks able to help this couple out? Let’s make their remaining time together memorable and happier.

I wonder what a company of people, who were advised to dumb down their CVs to suit the market, would look like. IMO this would be an amazing consultancy full of some incredible advisers.

Having completed my maximum six years on one board, I’m on the lookout for another board role, either as a member or as chair. Anyone else need my expertise in a governance capacity? Sing out, keen to see who might need my guidance (especially tech, exports, licensing, design, creative—or something which doesn’t have these ingredients yet might need them!).

Very stoked to have scored Highly Commended for Panos: My Life, My Odyssey in London on Tuesday at the Business Book Awards! While not there in person my mug was in the room! Congratulations to Panos Papadopoulos for being recognized for his story! It was a privilege to ghost for such a dear friend of over 20 years and get his words on paper. Big thanks to Martin Liu at LID Publishing for overseeing everything, Aiyana Curtis and the editorial team, and Teya Ucherdzhieva! Thank you to Stefan Engeseth for his friendship and for being the first to break the news to me!

Can I now say I’m an ‘award-winning author’?

I have a new book coming out! Well, it’s not really mine—it’s the autobiography of my good friend Panos Papadopoulos, the creator of the swimwear label Panos Emporio. Through 2021, Panos and I collaborated on bringing his story to life, and it’s out on May 26 in London, with a launch event in Stockholm on May 31! Read more about it at https://lucire.com/insider/20220516/swedens-king-of-swimwear-panos-papadopoulos-reveals-all-in-his-new-autobiography/ (with ordering links from Amazon UK and Barnes & Noble).

The end of Facebook pages? « Jack Yan: the Persuader Blog 02/05/2022

I imagine some of you also follow Lucire. The reason there have been no updates from Lucire on Facebook since ANZAC Day (April 25) is that the ‘Create post’ button is missing, no post from any Meta-approved app can get through, and the settings and most of the other functions are now gone, too. No, we weren’t hacked. Here’s more:

https://jackyan.com/blog/2022/05/the-end-of-facebook-pages/

Since that post, they now claim that as the page has a strong following, they (and not we) instigated a form of two-factor authentication for it—which unfortunately prevents us (!) from doing anything with the page! Hey, Mark: ‘Gun, meet foot.’

I imagine someone out there can access it, since five years ago I had full privileges on a page where I had no role whatsoever!

https://jackyan.com/blog/2017/06/facebook-lets-me-have-full-access-on-someones-public-page-but-im-not-an-admin/

We’ll do a bit more investigating but overall I’m prepared to call it quits on this buggy platform, which has never functioned properly. If it can be easily restored, fab; the automated gadgets will recommence their work. If not, then that was a run. Not a good run, just a run.

The end of pages? « Jack Yan: the Persuader Blog Facebook has removed the most important functions on a page. They really are this stupid.
