A really special afternoon of sweet music and beautiful connections at the Festival of Small Halls Eudlo concert where I was lucky enough to be invited to open the event as the local supporting act.
Big thanks to the team from Woodfordia/ Feat of Small Halls, Eudlo community hall and all their volunteers, and to the wonderful musicians I shared the stage with last night, whose music touched my heart… haileycalvert

I've been living away from PNG, my homeland, for almost a year now... the longest I've ever spent in another country. And what I've started to notice is a longing for a much deeper connection to the places that are significant in my life; where I was born (Rabaul, ENB), my ancestral lands (Bulolo/Garaina in Morobe Province and Saposa in Bouganiville), as well as the sounds, the smells, the feelings, the cultures, the wisdoms... all of it.
Naturally I've been exploring this longing for connection through music. Lyrics to old lullabies, church tunes, war chants or childhood songs have come flooding back into my memory ... bringing with it words in local tok ples that I thought I had forgotten.
While scrolling through youtube I came across this mourning chant sung beautifully by the people of Siasi heritage (Morobe province). It touched my heart and I stayed up late last night putting down chords on my guitar and it inspired me to record this little video from my backyard in Australia... I may have mis-pronounced a few words in the Siasi language... sori tru to all my Siasi wantoks.. feel free to correct me in the comments!
To be honest, I woke up this morning with the chant in my head and had to put something down, so I grabbed my in-house media assistant (thanks Kalolaine Uechtritz ) and we did three raw takes on an iphone 15 pro... no mics or special attachments, just straight to phone.
I dropped the audio from the three raw files into logic pro, added some reverb and I pitch-shifted two audio files to 5th and 12th scale to create a bit of background harmony... the sound of the birds was what was recorded in the original files from the surrounding nature... and this was the result.... something that took me on a magical journey through an imaginary g*teway back to Morobean lands.
3am feels….

The image in this poster is from a long walk I did to a place called the Baiune in the Bulolo district... as you can see it's pretty magical... I'll be sharing more stories from growing up in Bulolo and Morobe Province in my upcoming show, and how those days shaped my early musical influences.
