3 signs that you have acute appendicitis

How do you know if you have gallstone disease?

Gallstone simply means the presence of stones in the gallbladder. It is usually caused by fatty diet or fried foods. Patients with gallstones are usually asymptomatic until complications occur. The 3 most common complaints are

WHAT IS EJECTION FRACTION IN YOUR 2DECHO RESULT?

"Doc Alan, I recently had a 2D Echo ( heart ultrasound). It says my left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) is 60%. What does it
mean? Is this normal?"

Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF or just EF) is the percentage of blood in the heart that is pumped out after each contraction. Let's just say that the left ventricle contains 100 mL of blood and then pumps out 60 mL into the aorta, then 40 mL is left inside. Therefore,

60 mL (blood pumped out) ÷ 100 mL
volume of blood before contraction
= 60 % ( this is the ejection fraction or EF)

The EF measures the pumping ability of the heart. To diagnose heart disease and determine EF, a cardiologist performs a 2D Echo examination. There are other ways to check EF such as a cardiac MRI or a nuclear or MUGA scan, but these are not always available and are expensive, so a 2D Echo is used more often.

A normal EF is 50 - 70 %. It means the heart
is contracting adequately. In some conditions, the heart is weak, reducing its pumping ability and leading to an EF below normal. The following terms are used to describe these abnormal findings:

Borderline EF = 41 - 49%
Reduced EF = 40 % and below

The lower the ejection fraction, the weaker the heart and the more likely the patient manifests with symptoms of heart failure such as shortness of breath at rest or during
exertion, difficulty of lying flat on bed or signs of water retention such as leg edema.
This type of heart failure associated with
an EF of 40% or less is referred to as Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF).

However, people with normal EF can still have heart failure. The left ventricle in these cases is very stiff and unable to relax. This causes problems in filling the left ventricular chamber with enough blood and heart failure ensues. This type of condition is called Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction ( HFpEF).

▪ A 2D Echo is an important tool to check heart function of which EF is an important determinant.
▪ Always look at EF in your 2DEcho result; now you know what it means
▪ EF should be correlated with symptoms to make an accurate assessment of a patient's heart condition
▪ Always discuss your 2D Echo result with your cardiologist; he or she will guide you on what to do next.
