MassKara Festival History

You may already know a thing or two about the MassKara Festival description but here’s a piece of detailed information about its history, MassKara Festival place of origin, and more. MassKara Festival started at a time of crisis and disaster in the 1980s. The World Market prices for sugar, the province’s monocrop, and main source of livelihood went drastically down. Because of these, two artists thought of promoting mask making as an alternative source of income for the locals. However, people were doubtful if the masks would be sold. So then-Mayor Jose “Digoy” Montalvo suggested having a mask festival instead.

Then a tragic ferry accident happened. The M/V Don Juan sank in the same year carrying mostly people from the province including those from prominent families of Bacolod. Because of these incidents, the question rose: Shall the festival proceed?

Mayor Montalvo said, because of these disasters, the more they need this festival to happen to bring back smiles and lift the spirits of the locals. That is the origin of MassKara Festival.

The smiling masks were a declaration of the people of Bacolod City that they will pull through and survive the challenges and tragedies that they are facing. Hence, Bacolod is called “The City of Smiles”.

One of the biggest and most awaited events in the Philippines is the MassKara Festival that will let you see the city at its liveliest. MassKara is derived from the words “mass” meaning “many” and “kara” meaning “faces,” thus calling it the Festival of Many Faces.

Known as the City of Smiles, Bacolod parades many smiling masks worn by the locals during this festival in the Philippines. Many tourists visit Bacolod in October to witness this grand Filipino cultural festival.

Bacolod is becoming modern yet relaxed and smiling☺️

ANOTHER REASON TO SMILE WHILE IN BACOLOD😄👌🎭

BACOLOD City has its pioneering spirit in the implementation of the public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program with the launching of the first units initiated by Choret Corporation in partnership with JMC Bacolod.

The said modernization program is part of the initiatives of the national government through the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) aligned with the legislative framework attained by former Third District representative Alfredo "Albee" Benitez.

INTERESTINGLY SWEET🍭

BACOLOD CITY🎭🏙
Bacolod, city, northwestern portion of the island of Negros, Philippines. On a coastal plain washed by Guimaras Strait, it lies opposite Guimaras Island and has been called the Philippine sugar capital because of its central location within the nation’s most important sugar-producing area. Bacolod’s growth began after 1800, when it was first used as a convenient gathering point for traffic bound for Iloilo, on the island of Panay. With subsequent development of the sugar plantations, it became Negros’ most populous urban area and a regional trade centre. Its outport, Pulupandan, is situated to the south along the main coastal highway and is an important fishing port.

The city’s rectangular street pattern is unusual among Philippine coastal communities. Bacolod is served by a major airport, the provincial hospital, and the private University of Negros Occidental-Recolestos (1941). The large provincial capitol building is set amid spacious landscaped grounds, and an old stone church and convent are in the central square. Imposing residences of wealthy planters are on the city’s outskirts.

NEGROS ISLAND🧦🌾
Negros produces much of the Philippines’ sugar and is one of the wealthiest and most politically influential regions in the nation. The sugarcane farms and centrals (mills that produce raw sugar from cane) are concentrated in the north and west. Large numbers of migrant sugar workers annually cross the strait from Panay to harvest the cane. Rice, coconuts, bananas, papayas, and mangoes are secondary crops raised on Negros, and corn (maize) is the major food crop. Timber extraction and processing is important. Mineral deposits include copper, mined at Sipolay, and gypsum, coal, and rock phosphates; salt is produced in the east.

PASALUBONG PROBLEM?

MERZCI’S is everyone’s go-to Pasalubong Center in Bacolod and here are the ones you can buy and bring home your friends will surely enjoy!

MERINGUE
A delicacy that has been around even since the Spanish period; Meringue is a simple food that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. Basically, Meringue makes use of whipped egg whites with confectioner sugar which is then baked to perfection. It is an easy meal to bring anywhere, making it a great snack whenever you travel back home. Just make sure to leave some for your family.

BISCOCHO
Have you ever heard of the Italian delicacy Biscotti? Biscocho is a quite similar to that. It is Spanish word that translates to ‘biscuit’. It is simple baked bread that is drizzled, topped or coated with either butter or condensed milk.

Tip: The best pairing with Biscocho is a cup of freshly made coffee or tea; either hot or cold. Great for breakfast and afternoon snacks!

PIAYA
This is the most popular delicacy throughout Bacolod City; Piaya is crunchy bread/flat bread that has been stuffed with muscovado-based syrup (How delicious does that sound?) Many prefer to eat this probably after a heavy meal just to wash off the taste of meat from the palette. This also works great with coffee; some choose juice or sodas though.

BARQUILLOS
A deceiving delicacy in Bacolod, how is Barquillos deceiving? It may look like a plain and simple rolled wafer stick snack but its crunch and taste can definitely shock you which is why many actually use it as toppers for other desserts such as ice cream, some even use it on cake. But if you want t keep it simple, just have it with coffee, tea, or juice.

BARQUIRON
Barquillos is a classic and scrumptious delicacy, and Barquiron puts a twist on this delicacy. Barquiron is barquillos/crunchy wafer roll filled with the undeniably tasty polvoron. So in other words, Barquiron is like a 2-in-1. You get the crunchy with the sort of smooth texture at the same time.

BUTTERSCOTCH
Not too sweet nor is it too bland, Butterscotch is yet another popular delicacy in Bacolod because of the perfect balance of taste. Basically, this butter bar with toasted cashews is a snack made in the heavens.

NAPOLEONES

A soft and sweet delicacy; the pastry is of a Napoleones is extremely mouth-watering, its custard filling makes it a great combo, and to make it even greater, it is topped with a sugar glaze which just completes the package of creating a perfect and very desirable snack.

Don’t forget to go shopping for this pasalubongs for your family and loved ones! Manamit guid ni mo!😋

Reasons why you should date a Bacolodnon. ❤️👱‍♂️👩‍🦰💐🥂

Still loveless and waiting for ‘the one’? Are you tired of seeing all your friends get into relationships while you remain hopelessly single? Why not date a Bacolodnon ( someone from Bacolod )? These reasons below aren’t just rumors. They’re facts 🤭

Read on to know the top 3 reasons why you should go ahead and try dating a Bacolodnon 🙂

1. WE SPEAK HILIGAYNON (ILONGGO)

Need I say more? We Bacolodnons speak Hiligaynon, which is by far the sweetest sounding dialect you’ll hear in the Philippines. In fact, the dialect’s tone and pronunciation of words is so smooth and sweet, you’ll hardly be able to tell if we’re angry or if we’re having a good day ( most of Bisaya friends would usually tell me this and always wants to hear what I sound like when I’m angry lol ).

So, if we do date and get into a fight, you’ll probably feel like you’re the only one angry when we’re arguing.

2. WE WILL LOVE YOU AS MUCH AS WE LOVE FOOD.

Have you tried Chicken Inasal? Yep, that dish originated from Bacolodnons and it stems from our innate love for food! As our city has become a haven for food enthusiasts, it’s no wonder we Bacolodnons are food lovers as well! Our love for you will be like our love for ‘Paa’ and ‘chicken oil’. To heck with fancy dining, we’ll take you out to Aida’s for some inasal or to Aboy’s for some scallops!
