I was just informed by the nuns of the Daughters of Charity that the Atis of Boracay lost their appeal at the Department of Agrarian Reform central office to keep their agricultural lots given to them during the last administration by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte.

These lots are planted with various vegetables and fruit trees and also house poultry and livestock. In short, it’s a viable agricultural land being managed well by the Atis.

But the government is canceling their land title because of the pressure from powerful business interests who want to take away the Ati’s precious ancestral land.

The Atis who are the original people of Boracay will now bring their case to the Court of Appeals. They are asking for financial assistance for their expenses in this struggle.

As AKaP volunteers fighting for IP rights, I am asking your support for the Atis through the ff endeavors:

1. Support the Angat Kalikasan Pilipinas documentary on the Atis’ struggle once we have finished its production. Some of our volunteers are currently editing the material we filmed and we hope to have its launching this February

2. Join and promote our fund raising sunset Valentines hike this Feb 10 at Mt Balagbag, Rodriguez, Rizal as proceeds will be for our activities including the Atis advocacy.

3. Join our communications advocacy team to disseminate information to the public about the Atis plight. Their story has to gain popular support in order to influence the court’s decision.

4. Think of other ways we can support the Atis through fund raising and advocacy activities.
