THERE’S NO SPACE!
The Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources (DOST PCAARRD) on Monday educated netizens on the correct English translation of the popular Filipino crop “kamote.”
In a Facebook post, DOST PCAARRD said that “kamote” is “sweetpotato” in English, noting that it does not have a space and that it is not two words.
The department also shared that sweetpotato is one of their research and development staples. (Facebook/DOST PCAARRD)

Growing crops is still possible even if you have limited land and space. How? Through Container gardening! It allows you to grow and eat vegetables that are fresh and nutritious. It helps you save money and effort going to the market. It also reduces waste because you can reuse and recycle containers and compost your kitchen scrap.
This video will discuss what you need to know about container gardening such as selection of vegetables to plant, plant combinations, selecting suitable container for your plant, container drainage, soil or potting medium to use, soil depth, seed germination and transplanting, plant care, sunlight requirement, water requirement, cultivating and weeding, trellising, mulching, fertilizer application, pest management, harvesting, and preparation for next planting.

Not all fruits and vegetables are perfect. In fact, a high percentage of "ugly" is being rejected by supermarkets and are ending up in waste bins. These imperfect produce are still perfectly edible and could provide a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals.
What everyone can do to minimize food loss and waste:
1. Producers can start a farmers' market to sell imperfect produce at a lower price
2. Consumers should cook and buy only what they can consume
3. Be friendly! Share excess to neighbors and the needy
4. Preserve produce to extend their shelf life. Preserving may be done without using chemicals such as when freezing, pickling, drying/dehydrating, making marmalades, and brining.
