𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸: 𝗔𝘇𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘀

In a mind game, known to be played by two players on a checkered board of contrasting black and white colors—the Azote siblings’ prowess in chess shines through.

Sharing similar sets of genetic combinations attests that sports mastery runs in their blood. Siblings Ahmad Ali Azote and Fatimah Zahra Azote of the Caraga State University chess team put their names on the national radar after headlining CSU’s stint at the Philippine National Games (PNG) in Pasay City last December 2023 following a stellar Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS) performance.

The apple indeed never falls far from the tree, because when asked about where they discovered their love for the game and who taught them the sport, Fatimah, the younger Azote, revealed it was their father who indulged them in the beauty of chess. The 22-year-old started playing at the age of nine, while her 24-year-old brother, Ahmad, began at only three years old. Since then, they embraced the thrill of competing alongside each other, with their recent and ground-breaking tournament, their PNG debut last year, carrying the name of the university.

“It stands out as a memorable experience where I witnessed the fruits of my dedicated chess studies against two International Masters. Despite the challenge posed by the titled players, the tables turned, resulting in a draw. The climax of the match unfolded with myself and the Masters being the last individuals standing, as the surrounding players transformed into our audience,” Ahmad Azote shared.

Further, both players affirmed that one of the struggles of being a student-athlete is the heavy responsibility that comes along with juggling and balancing academics and training, especially in college. Along with that, these chess whizzes uncovered how boredom and sleepiness, though not as big of a deal to others, affect their game and are tough to deal with.

“When it comes to training, my brother is right about how it can get boring and make you feel sleepy. However, I've figured out that staying determined, constant chess puzzle review plus some tasty snacks helps me stay focused,” Fatimah stated.

This sibling duo made people wonder about the tactics and tricks to maintain mental composure and a winning mindset, especially during high-stake games. The secret is in their ability to remain composed under pressure and have practice sessions with the help of a chess engine to avoid repetitive mistakes and to stay sharp ahead of their tournaments.

Moreover, the future educator of the family, Ahmad, specializes in blindfold chess, where players only rely on hearing their opponent’s moves, using memory and their imagination instead of keeping a keen eye on the board. Apart from competing in different categories, this keeps the siblings discerned from each other, recognizing their distinct struggles and individual skills as athletes. This disparity displaced ‘sibling rivalry’ that never existed in their story, as their dynamics is rooted in mutual support.

More often than not, younger siblings who compete and play the same sport as their older siblings feel they are living in shadows as they follow in their kin’s footsteps to greatness in the field of sports. But the current Auditor of the University Student Government, Biology student, Fatimah Zahra, emphasised her tale as far above the ordinary, noting that she finds their unique and shared interest special and fulfilling.

“I can say that I haven’t felt living in his shadow; rather, it’s more like being a lit candle next to a torch. My brother represents the torch while I am the lit candle. In other words, we are both beacons of light, it's just that, he has more luminosity,” the latter remarked.

In addition, for the older Azote, it is a valuable experience to play side by side and to learn from each other’s mistakes. On top of that, it helps that they look at the game from different perspectives, they exchange insights on how to outplay their opponents, may it be in-game or in real-life battles – knowing the right move to execute based on what works for the situation. On a lighter note, Ahmad sees the game as a stimulation of mental and cognitive functions without putting risks of undue strain; he added that chess is supposed to contribute to avoiding aneurysms.

“Together, our family's involvement in chess, guided by our father, has had a significant impact on our lives, both intellectually and personally,” Fatimah underscored, implying the existence of the widely accepted genetic theory of heredity.

The brother-sister tandem conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to Caraga State University, their coach, their parents, and the LGU-Butuan City for their steadfast assistance that enabled them to compete in the national scene for the province. Above all, to Almighty Allah for His gift of life.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱: 𝗔𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘇 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗿𝘆

When he sat across the table with me for a working lunch interview, his gentle demeanor proved that there was more to the eye than a national arnis gold medalist.

A multi-passionate individual, Edjohn Lee Celmar Quilaman is a third-year Bachelor of Arts in Sociology student, who strikes with passion in everything he does.

Quilaman won gold at the Philippine National Games last December for the Male Live Stick 80-90 kg Category, beating four other teams from various Local Government Units. His win catapulted the dynamic Butuan City arnis team and Caraga State University to the Philippine sports scene. What makes this feat more remarkable is that he achieved this with less than a year of playing arnis.

The quest and triumph to find gold for a beginner is not without its tribulations, since nothing can be achieved without initial resistance. And resistance, this arnis novice knew all too well.

“I think I started around the end of the second semester last year, mga July or August ata”, Edjohn recalled. He wanted to be a part of the team in the hopes of representing CSU again to the Mindanao Association of State and Tertiary Schools (MASTS) Inc. Friendly Games 2023, leaving behind his track record in shot put in 2022. After an initial rejection and weeks of rigorous training with the coaches and the whole team, he finally got in.

“From then on, wala na gyud ko’y na-miss na training. Even though mga 9 or 11 PM na ko makauli.”

Rigorous would be an understatement, so to speak. The athletic Edjohn would find himself after school hours batting the life out of the big tires they used to practice on at the Old Admin Building. He recalled going home to Brgy. Villa Kananga near midnight—and on one occasion, on foot from CSU because there were no multicabs around and his pockets ran out.

“You have to be diligent gyud. Bisan magdugo ang kamot, padayon lang gihapon.”
With all the glory, the team’s podium finishes seem to pale in comparison to their shiny main goal, as they saw the Philippine National Games as a wider training ground for the upcoming Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) Games this February.

Arnis was not Quilaman’s gateway to the sports scene though—he was quite the athlete since elementary and high school.

In 2019, he even represented the country in Singapore by being a part of the Philippine Tchoukball Team, still bringing Butuan City to the limelight. He also played football, shot put, and baseball in his younger years before taking hold of the batons.

As a student, athleticism empowered him to strike a balance between his priorities. Edjohn is pretty satisfied with the current weight between his academic and extracurricular demands, bouncing back from the grade dip he experienced when he first entered arnis.

“I’m actually doing okay, I’m fine sa akong grado.” he furthered.
But sports is not just what makes him the Edjohn-of-all-trades that he is. He is also a foodie who spends his leisure time mostly in the kitchen and has a knack for concocting refreshments.

“Naga-bake pud ko and bartending.” And as almost every Gen Z, coffee fuels him—most of the time, he brews his own caffeine fix.

With calloused hands and a kind heart, Edjohn is a soul who shows devotion to his family. A loving son and grandson, a caring brother, and a reliable friend. How he manages to keep up with the demands of his athletic and personal life, I could only imagine and applaud.

Edjohn’s story is proof that hard work and discipline beats talent, but the combination of the three could wield powerful athleticism, a mark that he continues to hit every single time.
